In With the Out Crowd

On In with the Out Crowd, you'll find a colorful variety of musical styles; styles that guitarist Grant Geissman touches on with rather more flair and accuracy than most musicians in the genre. There's the jazz-rock mix of "Did I Save?," the low- key, long-car-trip-across-open-...

Reviews:

Say that ! -- Grant Geissman
Guitar players, beware, there's a new sheriff in town. Actually Grant has been around for a while. He was actually Chuck Mangione guitar player during the trumpet masters heyday/prime. I have been a big fan of him since his debut album, = Good Stuff in 1978. -- Although I have been somewhat disappointed by most of his subsequent work, after. I have been waiting with baited breath for his return to those days. With Say That - he goes back to the killer form that smokes, most jazz guitar players off the stage. Say that-is the baddest jazz guitar CD that I have purchased in the last three or four years.

Took a Chance and it Payed Off
I took a chance on Grant Geissman's "Say That!" and it has paid off with dividends. For the last couple of months it has kept coming back into my CD playlist and it still sounds fresh.

Back to the '60s
You don't know his name, but you know his signature---the guitar solo from Chuck Magione's 1978 smash hit, "Feels So Good." Since then, he's been a studio musician extraordinaire, musical explorer and occasional purveyor of smooth jazz. With Say That! he goes retro, resurrecting images of Horace Silver and Lee Morgan's soul jazz outings of the early `60s, and most especially conjuring up memories of Wes Montgomery (with and without Jimmy Smith.) There's also a touch of Brazil, a smattering of Yellowjackets-like contemporary jazz, and an expansion on "Theme from Two and a Half Men" which he co-wrote for the TV show. Borrowing Tierney Sutton's rhythm section (bassist Trey Henry and drummer Ray Brinker), Geissman is a helluva guitarist, electric and acoustic, and saxman Brian Scanlon is a perfect foil. Rich in variety, this is a great album for those who don't realize they like jazz, and for those who do. --Jim Newsom Originally published in Port Folio Weekly - January 24, 2006 Copyright 2006 Port Folio Weekly. Excellent jazz from a fine guitarist
I am delighted to have happened on this CD. I have been thoroughly enjoying this excellent group, essentially a traditional guitar-based jazz quintet, with sax, keyboards (piano or B3), bass and drums. Grant Guissman is an established pop and smooth jazz instrumentalist, so if you are familiar with his previous work you might be a bit surprised by this CD. The graphics and packaging are unique. The CD plastic itself is black and looks like a record! I had my doubts, but I assure you it plays fine. A miniature copy of the hand-written sheet music for the title cut is included along with a separate fold-out set of notes by Bill Milkowski. Overll, one of the most pleasing and creative efforts I have run across.
