Its a rare human who actually enjoys clipping a dogs nails; and rarer still, the dog who enjoys it. Enter Dremels cordless groomer, a quiet, battery-powered rotary tool that gently grinds down your pets nails without cutting. We happen to know a particular hound named Sophie whos endured more than her share of cracked nails and bleeding nail beds, the result of the standard guillotine-type nail trimmers. Though she was a bit wary of the Dremel, she sniffed at it and decided it was harmless. Then we set it on the floor and turned it on. Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on. The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us. We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time. If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the -inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. Other than that, its a tail-wagger.

Great way to trim nails, wrong Dremel for the job
I've been grinding nails on my dogs for years now and it is 100X better for your dog than clipping! It doesn't pinch and less chance of cutting too short.
With that said, I've been using the Dremel 2-speed with rechargeable battery for years, I decided to buy a second one after leaving my "old faithful" at my vacation house. Thought I'd try this model - the "pet nail" tool. Well, much to my surprise, it takes 4AA batteries instead of the rechargeable pack. I figured I'd give it a shot since it was here and the dogs were clicking on the wood floors. Well, I didn't even get through both dogs before the batteries quit, and I'm not talking cheap batteries either - I used the Silver/Blue Energizers that have a longer life than average batteries. At 4 batteries per dog, this tool will cost me a fortune. I just ordered another one with the rechargeable battery pack and will just keep this one in my travel bag for when we're away and need an emergency touch up. The one with the batter pack was only $1 more!
Don't buy this model - get the one with the rechargeable pack.
FYI - Dremel told me I could retrofit my battery unit with a battery pack, but it would cost almost as much as the unit itself - no thanks. Doggie peticure
This works great on my labradoodles nails. Easy to use. Would recommend for in between groomer visits. Not for me
I thought this product would make nail maintenance a breeze for my dogs, but Nope not the case. My dog was patient with me, but the product didn't shorten her nail. I can't even say it smoothed it. I take my dogs to the vet for nail trimming still. I bought two, one for me and one for my son's girlfriend. It didn't work for her either, so the product may work for some, but it's not for me. This is a great product . We have two small dogs who are kind of fussy about having their nails done, but neither one protested much when we used the dremel pet tool. Nice design because it's cordless and not too noisy like a regular plug in model - in other words it's just right. We only use the low speed setting which seems to work best. Highly recommended. Doesn't come with tools
I bought this thing for my dogs, went to trim their nails and found out there was no toolbit to put the sanders onto unlike what is shown in the picture. No wrench either. Don't be fooled the picture does not show what really comes with it (5 sanders) and they want you to buy the toolbit for extra. |
