Lungs, produced by Paul Epworth, James Ford and Steve Mackay, is an intoxicating mix of delicate fragility, dark humor and twisted Tim Burton style fairy-tales. Also boasting fresh tracks like new single 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)', 'Drumming' - with its epic denseness, the terrifyingly brilliant 'Howl' and 'Hurricane Drunk' with it's paradoxical charms of heartbreak, love and loss, Lungs promises to leave us wanting more of the insanely captivating Florence Welch. She Speaks To Me!!!!
I first heard of Florence and The Machine in Nylon Magazine and was hooked when I heard the song The Dog Days Are Over. Her voice is amazing and their is not one song on this CD that I don't like. I swear it is like the drums and instruments are part of my beating heart (lol). Her songs have you moving your feet and shaking your body and even has you wondering what these songs really mean to her. I would love for her to come to concert in the Chicago area so I can get a chance to see her live. I had to buy this CD when it finally came out in the U.S. The only problem I have with this CD is the fact that the deluxe dc was released after I bought the original, because I feel deprived of her full talents(lol) If you don't have this CD, I have no idea what you are waiting for, GET IT NOW! My favorite songs are You've Got The Love, I'm Not Calling You A Liar, Dog Days Are Over, Cosmic Love, Hurricane Drunk, Blinding, and My Boy Builds Coffins. Just when I thought that You've Got The Love could not get any better another group named The XX, who I am also obsessing about remixed the song and it is amazing so make sure to check that out too on youtube! This has to be one of the best cd's of 2009, and I feel as if many people are overlooking such a talent. :-)
Take a deeeeep breath...
If you've only heard "Kiss With a Fist" and took this artist for just another Alt Rock one-shot, then this album will be a shocker. "Kiss" is probably the least interesting track, and sounds very little like the rest of the songs (although "Girl With One Eye" has similar violent imagery). A rich sophisticated blend of rock-folk-world, fitting in with many other bands of today. Florence's voice is a brilliant instrument. The lyrics are dark, strange, worldly and poetic. "My Boy Makes Coffins," "You've Got the Love" and "Dog Days are Over" are my favorites so far.
Exhilarating!
Lungs is filled with beautiful melodies and unusual lyrics brought to life by Florence Welch's impassioned singing. "Kiss with a Fist" may have received a lot of notoriety, but there are at least a half-dozen better songs on the album, including the stunning first two tracks. "Drumming Song" and "Hurricane Drunk" are also standouts. To borrow from All Music Guide, this is "one of the most musically mature and emotionally mesmerizing albums of 2009". Power pop at its best.
Excellent!
I downloaded this on a whim. I heard Cosmic Love, and downloaded the whole CD instead of just the song and I couldn't be happier. The WHOLE album is good. Standout songs for me were definitely Cosmic Love, Howl and Drumming Song. But really...the entire album is awesome and not one song is skippable.
Worth the Hype
I often find that more experimental artists can get lost in being weird and lose focus of the most important part--the music. Florence Welch makes no such mistake. "Lungs" is accessible and fun to listen to the very first time through. On repeat listens I discovered just how layered and complex the album is. "Lungs" hits everything for me-great vocals, lyrics, arrangements and just has that special thing that makes you realize that ten years from now you'll still love the songs as much as you do now. Outstanding.
***edit-- I loved this cd so much that I went and bought the couple songs on the deluxe version because I had to have more. And I'm so happy I did because one of those songs "Swimming" is now probably in my top ten songs of all time...
