A "Homecoming" worth coming Home to..Everytime! I just don't know how Bill and Gloria Gaither do it, but every time they pull off one of these "homecomings" on video, it is a whopping success! MEMPHIS HOMECOMING is just fabulous beyond words! On location at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, the entourage filled the place for two spectacular concerts, and boy, was it electrifying!Several new faces are among the "Homecoming friends" this time: Alicia Williamson, Lisa Diggs, Kevin Davidson and his wonderful gospel choir, "The Voices" just to mention a few. The music, as always is outstanding, featuring some old favorites, "We'll Soon Be Done with Troubles and Trials" (The Goodmans), "The Old Rugged Cross" (Hovie Lister at the piano) and "Wait Till You see Me in My new home" (Ivan Parker). A revival of sorts for a few songs that were sung many years ago happens on this video: "Up Above My Head" featuring George Younce and Jake Hess, resurrecting an old Statesmen Quartet song from the 1950s; "I Saw the Light" featuring Jessy Dixon, Guy Penrod, Lillie Knauls, Sue Dodge, Sandi Patty and George Younce singing an old "Hank Williams" tune, once a favorite in many southern churches. Of course, the Talley Trio is always superb, and Debra's rendition of "Thinkin' Bout Home" is no exception. My VERY FAVORITE MOMENT of the whole evening was the great "Searchin'" sung jointly by David Phelps, Alicia Williamson, Sandi Patty, Marshall Hall, Johnny Minnick, Tonya Goodman Sykes, and George Younce. Maybe because it reminded me of my great Pentecostal heritage, where the brothers and sisters always sang and testified about their walk with the Lord. That one song is worth the price of the video! There are no "weak" or "slow" moments on this production. As usual, Mark Lowry's humor is superbly funny, making a joke about everything from the "ducks" in the lobby of the Hotel to Jake Hess' hairpiece, and his propensity to use "hyperbole" as Bill (a former English teacher) would so eloquently call it.The Gaither Vocal Band does an incredible job of "Build An Ark"--a revival of one of the original GVB songs from the early (and I do mean "early") 1980s. This video is all about "homecoming" and "revival." You want revival in your heart of some of the great music in the twentieth century church...you'll find it here. Get this video and "come on home" with the Gaithers and their Homecoming Friends. |
