Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
These are 100% cotton tabi socks from Japan. They are available in white with a white sole or black with a white sole.
Each tabi has 3 tin tab closures on the ankle. These tabi socks have a heavier cotton sole for indoor use or use with zori sandals.
The tabi are sized by INCH SIZE, NOT SHOE SIZE. To find your inch size, stand on a piece of paper and make an outline of your bare foot, with your pencil ALWAYS PERPENDICULAR to the floor. This is very important and will allow room for your heel. Measure the drawing from the tip of your longest toe to the end of your heel. **IMPORTANT!!! If you are in-between sizes or have doubts because you are worried about shrinkage, ROUND UP to the next 1/2 inch size. MEDIUM width only. These tabi may not fit a wider foot. Hand or machine gentle wash in cold water, line dry. Machine drying may shrink the tabi socks.
PLEASE REMEMBER YOU ARE ORDERING INCH LENGTH, NOT IN SHOE SIZES.

Reviews:
Terrible, horrible, miserable
I bought a pair of Tabi socks for my mother. They were costly in my opinion...$25.00 plus another $5.00 for shipping but that was okay. I ordered a SIZE 9. When they arrived they were the size of a baby's foot. I wrote to The House of Rice and they said that's what a size nine is. They would have exchanged them for me if I had paid another $5.00 for shipping back and another $5.00 for shipping back to me making the grand total $40.00 I would never do business with that company again and I still haven't given up trying to get my money back!
Decent quality, and also quite cute!
Length of Ownership: One week
Quality of Material: Good for dojo practice, but I have some doubt about outdoor durability.
Quality of Workmanship: Decent
Traction: Slightly slick cloth soles, but not as slick as athletic socks. Will provide good pivoting ability.
Appearance: Nice
Sizing: I agree with the other reviewers that these are made small. Also, they definitely shrink when washed.
I wear a 9.5 Shoe, and I ordered size 11. Unwashed, they drowned my feet but after washing in hot water and drying on high, they are only slightly loose. I could've gotten away with a 10.5 size if I wanted a more snug fit, but they do fit acceptably.
Fastenings: I'm slightly concerned that the fastenings could come apart or break eventually. As these are my first pair of Tabi socks, I'm uncertain whether to call this a "con". The fastenings are little clips that you slide behind loops of string. Are these fastenings meant to be "traditional" or functional? I don't know. Time will tell.
Overall: Great for kenjutsu practice or anyone obsessed with the idea of wearing "ninja booties"
I'd've given these 5 stars if not for the sizing rigamarole and the slightly questionable fastenings. Still, consider that I'm not a great authority on how Tabi should be fastened.
white cotton tabi socks, ankle-length
I love these. They are just like the ones we wore in our house when I was a kid, with zories (white shag carpetsare difficult to keep clean). Only drawback is: they are a bit pricey. They are sturdy, but still a bit high.
Exactly what I wanted
These were exactly what I was looking for: good Japanese-style socks to wear with my hakama in aikido. Choosing the size wasn't a big deal. I measured just as described. I have skinny feet so they were a little baggy so I simply washed them in hot water and put them in the dryer on high.
Just an fyi for anyone looking for something a little stickier: the sole doesn't have quite as much tread as I would like. I think it has more to do with our mats than anything else--tatami style judo mats--so movement is a bit of an adjustment.
good quality
I am overall happy with these. They may have to stretch out depending on your foot so there may be a break in period. One thing I noticed is that they smelled funny when I got them so I washed them first to get rid of it.
