Prodcut Description: [More Information ...] Ascendancy, the group's second album and their first on Roadrunner Records, is filled with carefully crafted songs that surge with energy, passion and originality. Like their solid 2003 debut Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy is rooted in '80s and '90s thrash, recalling the glory days of Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, and Testament. But the new disc doesn't stop there, incorporating aspects of melodic death metal and even prog-rock. Twin guitar harmonies and point/counterpoint dynamics abound, twisting around vocals that alternate from melodic and pained to caustic and full of rage. "We had so much more to work with this time," says guitarist and lead vocalist Matt Heafy of the Jason Suecof-produced disc. "I had great guitar sounds, Travis [Smith, drums] is playing like a machine, and the vocals are so much more multi-dimensional."While the first album, lyrically, addressed romantic disillusionment and child abuse, this time the songs confront spousal abuse, suicide, depression, tyranny and freedom of speech. However, even at his most poignant, Heafy prefers expressing gut emotion to preaching. "I've found that when you have a negative aspect in your life, you can find so much negativity in other people's lives around you, and in the world. For me, it's good to write about the negativity to get some of it out of my system."

Reviews:
Don't judge this book by its cover I purchased this album after hearing "Dying in Your Arms" on Pandora.com. To tell you the truth, I listened to it once through and thought it was a piece of crap. I thought I had waisted my money. After about two months, I came back and listened to it again, and I started to like it a little more. I think i listened to it three times that day, and I absolutely LOVED it!!!!!! When I first heard it, it sounded like annoying noise, but the other times I listened to it I could really start hearing the immpressive music and lyrics behind it. The interesting intro and "Rain" is an explosive way to start the album, and the rest of the album has a full body with songs like "Ascendancy", "Dying In Your Arms", and "Suffocating Sight". The album ends with a bang with "Departure" and "Declaration", which are both amazing songs. If you are thinking of buying this album, it is well worth the money, and if you dislike it at first, don't make the same mistake I did. DO NOT judge this album by its first listen. It may take two or three times through to truely find the magnificence of this great album. It is worth every penny in the end. Great album despite what other idiots say Ok, again, pretty much all my reviews are only in response to other reviews on this site. My reason for that is, some of ya'll give something a terrible review, and then give no such reason to support your view. example, "this sucks", or "they just should quit". One person on here, referred to Trivium as "false and crappy metal". Well i would like to know what you consider metal. Please enlighten me. Now, if we are talking about the likes of Metallica and Megadeth here, then surely you can forget about this band Trivium. But as far as metal goes, these guys aren't the best, but they make great music. For the idiot that was talking about metalcore fans making fun of emo; number one, It's retarded to say that a song is emo simply by looking at its title, number 2, "emo" is not even a type of metal. "Emo" is short for "emotional" if you idiots didn't figure that out already, and ALL rock and metal is emotional. If you think it is not, you are a retard. And yes, nu-metal is a sub-genre of metal, hince the name "nu-metal". How stupid can you be? And for the guy that said this is just a bunch of atrocious noise and isn't music; i was looking at your other reviews, and you don't even like this type of music. So why review the cd? It's definitely not the genre you like, so don't listen to the cd, and don't review it. it's a waste of time. I certainly don't go out and buy and/or review pop albums, cause i absolutely hate pop. It just makes no sense. So stick with your type of music, otherwise, you don't know what your talking about. Great cd, must have for ANY metal fans. Great Metal Album Great guitar work and vocals. This is album is superb. I'm not a huge metal fan but enjoyed this album. What makes metal so enjoyable to me is that fact that he actually sings his chorus and yells out all his verses. All yelling pretty much makes a dull album IMO. 5 Star perfect execution! My Favorite Metalcore Album, Trivium Ascended New Heights Trivium are a American Metalcore band that have really freshened the otherwise grim commercial metal scene. Metalcore is often times dubbed not 'true' metal to some metal elitists afoot. The reason behind this madness is for its delving in hardcore. Whatever you consider metalcore to be, their is no denying Trivium struck gold here! The albums manor isms are scream for a bit, splice in some clean vocals (much like Kill Switch Engage), and spiced up harmonizing guitars.
"Ascendancy" is the bands sophomore album, and achieved high praise. As much appraise as it claimed, it was also cited for startlingly similar riffs from their metal predecessors.
Beginning the piano classic classically laden "The End of Everything", this band knows how to compose.Banging right into the highly produced sounds of "Rain". Heavy, fast, and amazing tones come at ones ears in a amazingly aggressive manor. "Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr" is one of the bands signature songs. Cratering with a vast drumming intro, inducing one with the 'I have to learn to play the riffs on this song' guitar riff, and climaxing with a harmonic minor solo... ahhh music worthy of a metalhead. Relief the first few songs are good, and the rest remain just as valiant. "Suffocating Site" pitches a strong breakdown, Trivium know how to pump fans (and get them to crank their speakers).
Other songs worth of strong mention are "Ascendancy" which is another staple to the bands repertoire, the screaming vocals are great and the solo twists in two directions. "The Deceived" shows Triviums celerity to answering ones thrashy needed dosage of a song. The harmonizing towards the end is a bit cliche' though, but the song non the less is top notch.
"Departure" and "Declaration" touch base upon similarities if quickly listened upon. Rest assure they are quite different, and easily contrast once passing of the intros. "Departure" goes for a softer acoustic approach and smooth vocals, while "Declaration" bats an almost too perfect heavy quality to it.
While Trivium do have a newer release 2007's "The Crusade", it's really not better or worse. It strikes many as too Metallica like, or too much of a dramatic change in sound. So they really contrast far too much for comparison. Overall still a good album to look into, but "Ascendancy" is a much truer fulfilling start to get into the band with.
"Ember to Inferno" is Trivium's debut, another great album to check out if you are a fan of the bands heavier content. The production isn't nearly as great, but sounds much similar to "Ascendancy" than previously noted "The Crusade". With three albums and a EP out, Trivium have a new album tagged "Shogun" on the horizon. Promising to return to their heavier material, while not having so closely associated 'stolen' riffs.
The production really can't be beat by a metal album, the quality seems as good as Metallica's "Black Album" was back in the day (which still holds amazingly today). This is the album that re inspired the metal rusting in me. the worst music ever made I thought hearing a short bit of piano music to start the album would be a sure sign of a creative, exciting listen. Boy was I wrong. This is just straight up horrendous, brain-shaking atrocious useless noise. There's nothing appealing about a singer switching from incredibly annoying and noisy vocals to unmemorable second rate alternative rock. This is the worst thing I have ever listened to. |
