Reviews:
Not up-to-date when it comes to ibuprofen!!!! After all the books I have read about what you should not do, while you are pregnant, I really needed this book to calm me down. It has very good and plenty of information that is usefull. BUT...
...this book is from 2004 and there is something in there that is wrong!!! IBUPROFEN is NOT SAFE while you are pregnant, not even while you are trying to get pregnant!!!!! My doctor showed me a new research from Europe from February 2008, which found out that taking Ibuprofen while you are trying to get pregnant can make you infertile! And while you are pregnant, it can harm your unborn child seriously!!!
The author of this book wrote that there is no research for that, and he also writes directly that taking ibu is save. That was maybe in 2004 the case, but it is not anymore! I would have bought this book again, because it really helped me to calm down a bit, but I trusted my senses more than I trusted the authors advice, as it came to ibu. I was glad, I did... Useful information, but sadly lacking... I thought this book did a pretty good job of separating fact from fiction when it comes to pregnancy concerns. However, I felt that many of the views expressed were a bit cavalier. I also felt that I was being talked "down to" many times, or made to feel foolish for my pregnancy-related fears. The overall tone of the book (as might be expected from the title) is that basically all pregnancies end happily, so just don't worry. Sadly, I know first hand that this is not always true, and I fear this book may foster a false sense of security for many expectant parents. My first pregnancy ended in a stillbirth at 39 weeks, so I am all too aware that tragedies can and do happen. Overall, I think this book might be helpful to someone who is in a first pregnancy, and blissfully ignorant of what COULD happen, but if you are one who has been touched by a real tragedy, this book will be of very little comfort. Grossly Inaccurate I have never felt a need to write a review about a book until now. Being pregnant for the first time, I've been looking for a book about pregnancy. I only read the intro on-line, but I from a few other reviews I see the rest of the book gets worse... all the inaccuracies sound disgustingly irresponsible for women who may not know better.
Just from the intro--Pregnancy tests are at least 99% accurate--not 1 out of 4. Ovulation kits predict when you will ovulate, (in my case extremely accurately)not tell you after the fact. HcG is what causes your corpus luteum to continue secreting progesterone and, consequently, miss your period. If you're not secreting HcG -- you're not pregnant. An MD doesn't know this? In women with infertlity realted to endometriosis, PCOS and even unexplained, nutrition CAN help your body heal... and give you a better chance at getting pregnant. A relief for a First Timer This book really helped me to feel less paranoid during early pregnancy. All of the other books I had at home - What to Expect and Your Pregnancy Week by Week - were freaking me out and making me worry about all of the rare and strange complications that can happen. The Panic Free Pregnancy uses statistics to show the reader that occasionally rare disorders and complications can happen - but emphasizes that they are extremely rare and that you are likely to have a very healthy pregnancy. I don't follow everything that I read in this book, but I believe it's well worth the read for the mom who needs to hear that your pregnancy is extremely likely to be healthy - no matter what you do. This made me feel much more secure in my first pregnancy. Waste of Money and bad information Perhaps if you became pregnant by accident and know nothing about how your body works and have a Dr. who doesn't give you any information, this book would be helpful. However, as someone who has tried to get pregnant for 9 months and suffered a recent miscarriage, I find this book to be insulting. It is also filled with all sorts of misinformation and incorrect facts. The author is using outdated medical information and a lot of "People used to do it before they knew better so its okay" logic. I thought this book would help me relax about my pregnancy, but instead, it makes me angry to see that there is misinformation being spewed by someone who is supposedly a well-respected OB. |
