      Back to Bacharach

Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
Steve Tyrell, whose appearances in the two "Father Of The Bride" movies, and whose albums "A New Standard" and "Standard Time" established him as a premier contemporary interpreter of the Great American Songbook, now turns his attention to one of the legendary composers in all of pop music: Burt Bacharach. Steve has a personal stake in these classic songs. As a young man breaking into the record business in the 1960s, he became head of A&R and Promotion at Scepter Records, the history-making independent label that released the famous hits written by Bacharach and his lyricist partner Hal David, and recorded by the great Dionne Warwick. Tyrell was present at the creation of standards like "Walk On By," "Alfie," "I Say A Little Prayer," and many others. Moreover, he produced B.J. Thomas' Oscar-winning recording of Bacharach-David's "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head." One can only categorize Tyrell's performances on "Back To Bacharach" as definitive. His supporting cast includes the top session players on two coasts, as well as guest collaborators Herb Alpert, Patti Austin, Dionne Warwick, James Taylor, Rod Stewart, and Martina McBride. Steve's own singular vocal style, drenched in the Texas tones of his sophisticated R&B approach, is perfectly suited to these great hits. He sings the songs exactly the way everyone wants to hear them. To top it all of, Maestro Bacharach himself appears on three tracks as a performer and two as co-producer. Steve Tyrell's "Back To Bacharach" makes the case for adding Burt Bacharach to the roster of all-time great creators of the previous generation of American Songbook immortals---Porter, Gershwin, Berlin, Kern, and Ellington. And it does so with supreme style, taste, and expertise.

Reviews:

Tyrell is Terrible in Concert
We found Tyrell on "Singers and Standards" on Comcast a couple of years ago and truly enjoyed his music. THEN we jumped at the chance to see him in concert at the Golden Nugget in Vegas (a 600 seat venue.) We had front row, center stage tickets. And that's when the fantasy ended for Tyrell. He reads the lyrics off of a computer screen set in front of him as if we were at some karaoke show. Sorry to say but his sport-coat (a faded navy blue) appeared to have been purchased 2nd hand from Good-Will. Tyrell seems to have some symbiotic relationship with Hal David and Burt Baccarat (YAWN) whom he under-studied when he was a pup. He clearly doesn't have the "chops" to sing his new HD/BB songs and in concert brought out some back-up singers to "help him out" with his attempt which truly was (embarrassing) not his finest hour. He even went so far as to say that after 30 years he finally realized that he could change the gender of the artist of "I say a little prayer" with just one word. Regrettably I was embarrassed for the man. His older records are better but one CD we bought had (I think) 18 songs on it (poor marketing) and if you are not sick of him by the end of that CD, you will be by the time you see him in concert. Met him, seems like a nice guy BUT, he's no Pro IMHO.

memories
I really enjoy Steve's voice and his engaging musical style. This cd is very restful. If you love Bacharach music, you'll enjoy this.

Back to Bacharach by Steve Tyrell
I was truly disappointed with this Steve Tyrell CD. It is his worst, by far.

Steve Tyrell "Back to Bacharach" CD
This is a great CD. If you have not heard Steve Tyrell sing, you are in for a treat. If you have his standards albums, you already know what a great voice he has. The songs of Bacharach are wonderful. The musical arrangements are great, too. "What the World Needs Now" features Rod Stewart, Dionne Warwick, James Taylor, Martina McBride, and Burt Bacharach singing along with Steve. It's phenomenal! I highly recommend this CD!

The Guys In Love with the Music
Tyrell, a great entertainer--Bacharach great sound. You know that. Did you know he started in the biz as a go-fer for Mr. B? A Staff Producer at 19--his first job in the biz. He learned carressing a "This Guys In Love With You" from the ground up. In Back to B we hear dedication, effort and a 40 year journey from the studio behind Bacharach, up the industry ladder, and back into the studio beside Bacharach, Warwick, McBride, Taylor, Austin. Great friends. Hearing these greats do these songs you hear the song's soul. This ia an album birthed in love and pride of presentation. Golden Bacharach carressed as gold should be handled. The Bacharach songs you humed 30 years ago resonate softly, tenderly in this love filled presentation.
