| Spirit in the Dark One of Aretha's most committed-sounding albums--which, of course, is really saying something--the 1970 Spirit in the Dark remains among the high points of her Atlantic work. The breakup of her marriage may be an unspoken theme, but just as striking is her reinvention of well-know... | This Girl's in Love with You
| Young, Gifted and Black Like its predecessor, Spirit in the Dark, 1972's Young, Gifted and Black found Aretha moving with soul music's elite into a progressive phase that opened up the emotional content of her work even further. "All the King's Horses" mourns the death of her first marriage, while "Day ... | Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky) A re-issue of her 1973 album long deleted in the States. Hey Now Hey finds the Queen of Soul taking her untouchably powerful set of pipes somewhat left field of the straight-ahead Atlantic groove formula of the late '60s. This is not to suggest that the record is neither soulful ... | Who's Zoomin' Who? "You will remember my name," Aretha wryly announces at the end of this album's title cut. "I'm the one who beat you at your game." Such expressions of glee frequently break through Who's Zoomin' Who's mid-'80s gloss; the combination of the two made the disc her biggest critical a... | I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You/Including Respect This is the album on which Aretha finds her voice. She'd previously recorded for another label, but this Atlantic debut created the sound that has come to define her. Reviews:
(1.5 stars) I guess disco wasn't for her after all Well, see, that's the problem: she doesn't get anything right in this crappy disco collection. I'm glad she didn't write the material. It's disco, and it's not even good disco: the uptempo dance tracks are pretty much the same waste of a backing track recycled - four-on-the-floor beats, awkward slap bass, swooping disco strings - if you can imagine Aretha singing "I Will Survive", here's what you've got. So not only do the title song, which actually made number one in spite of being awful, and the Top Ten hit "Every Girl (Wants My Guy)", but to "I Wish it Would Rain". Yes, that's right, "I Wish It Would Rain" gets the '80s disco treatment. Who's idea was that? Perhaps it can be blamed on producer Luther Vandross. And the ballads... oh, my god, the ballads. It's hard to sit through "Pretender" and "Better Friends Than Lovers" - they pile on all these glossy trappings, but forget to give either any substance. Way to go! The last two tracks are all that redeems this, more specifically the lazy "Giving in"; "I Got Your Love" gets stale after five minutes, though at least some of it is listenable. I hope Aretha saw how bad this was, at least. Aretha & Luther- They Got It Right! The Late Luther Vandross was back for a second run at producing Miss Aretha, and he didn't dissapoint! Luther made Aretha sing on this one! 'Get It Right' is one of Aretha's better lp's, the production is slick and is pure Luther with those fantastic background vocals & arrangements.. The only miss here is her cover of the TemptationsGladys Knight & The Pips hit 'I Wish It Would Rain' I didn't care for this arrangement. "Every Girl" contains some of Aretha's best riffing, 'When you love me like that' is Aretha at her soulful smooth best! love this song! It was a shame that Luther never got the chance to produce another full record again, they only did one more song together 'Doctor's Orders' in 1991, I also recommend getting her 'Jump To It' cd, to hear Luther's first production on Re. 80s R&B At Its Best "Get It Right" was the second instalment of the Luther Vandross produced albums, and it perfectly compliments "Jump to It".
With Vandross back at the controls, Marcus Miller back on the bass and our Queen still in top form vocally, we have a set that's a touch more sophisticated than the first album. The title track and "Pretender" is 80s R&B at its best.
There is one track, however, that has to rank as one of the greatest Aretha tracks of all time - "I WISH IT WOULD RAIN". It's a funky ballad that has Aretha hitting notes that are way off the Richter scale! The calibre of the vocals (including the backing) is very high, and it's worth getting this CD for this alone.
It's unfortunate that two of Aretha's finest 80s albums aren't as well known as, say, the "Who's Zooming Who" album, but that's showbiz for you. "Get It Right" comes highly recommended, however.
Areatha And Luther Part Deax 'Get It Right' is Aretha's second and unfortunately final album with Luther Vandross, which is a pitty because Luther did all that he could to make her album a priority rather then produce just more great singles. The title track sounds alot like
"Jump To It",as does"Every Girl (Wants A Guy,as does the whole
album really."Pretender" is one of the funkiest soul numbers Aretha threw down in the 80's and "I Wish It Would Rain"
is an uptempo cover that (however it shouldn't) actually tears the Tempt's classic to shreds."Giving In","When You Love Me Like That" and "Better Friends Then Lovers" are all classic Franklin ballads,as with all her 80's tunes featuring her vocals in a slightly smokier context then her classic period.
Nevertheless 'Get It Right' is (sadly) a very rare gem on CD that needs to be snapped up emmediately if ever seen cheaply. Her greatest album of the 80's Not so many lp's from the 80's stand the test of time like this album with its four bass driven wonders : «Get it right», «Pretender», «When you love me like that» and «I wish it would rain». |
