Once: Music from the Motion Picture

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglov...

The Cost

You're three tracks into The Cost before you find a song, "The Rise," that opens with anything but singer Glen Hansard's voice as the first thing you hear. The beauty is, you're waiting for the voice, with its hints of Cat Stevens's tonality and its utterly distinct Irish lift. I...

Hugely popular in their homeland of Ireland, the Frames top the charts and play to 30,000 people in Dublin. The aptly-titled live album is their fifth and the one they're hoping will connect in America. The quintet's sound draws upon such acts as the Clash (with whom they share a...

For the Birds

Few albums are rich enough with a sense of place that they transport you to a different landscape. Engineered by famed producer Steve Albini, the Frames' fourth full-length release, For the Birds, is such an album. But instead of dropping you in Ireland, the band's home, or in an...

To say there has been a lot of anticipation for Coldplay's fourth album, Viva La Vida, is an understatement. Having enlisted legendary leftfield producer Brian Eno, borrowed their album title from a painting by renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and made tantalising remarks abou...

Burn the Maps

On their first studio album in nearly four years, the Frames have opted for a fuller, more adventurous sound than on 2001's Steve Albini-produced For the Birds, although this placid, smoky-bar ambiance owes more to 'Birds than to 1999's Dance The Devil. From the opening acoustic ...

Reviews:

Amazing experience!
Great songs, great perfomers, great show, great dvd... This is an incredible experience that you must try. I'm sure that you will enjoy it.Words can not describe exactly how this show is incredible.Believe me, you will not be disappointed.

My mind's made up - this is a good one!
I finally bought this after waiting in vain for netflix to send it. The wait time with them was something like "Infinitely Long Wait." I don't understand why they don't just buy more copies of the DVD in that situation. (??) Anyway, I'm glad I purchased it, as it pretty much fulfills all of the promise of Glen & Marketa's collaborations in Once. Their songs are "swell" (sorry, couldn't resist!), the harmonies are deluxe, and the sound quality is very good. We get to hear and see versions of their Once tunes (including the minimally featured title track!), plus some good Frames material from Glen. My only complaint with the production is that the camera stays on Glen too long and doesn't feature Marketa enough. On their duets, you'd like to see more shots of them singing together, but too often the camera's on Glen, with Marketa only heard (but not seen) in the background. The only real exceptions to this are some good shared shots on "Falling Slowly" (thankfully), and Marketa's lead turn on "If You Want Me." The latter tune is such a delight, it really makes you wish she would write more of her own songs.

GREAT MUSIC
This is a great concert DVD. I own MANY, and this is my 2nd favorite only after Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City... (doesn't get any better than that for me). If you love acoustic music a la Damien Rice, or loved the music from the movie "Once" but don't want to watch the whole thing again just for the songs (as was my case), then get THIS CONCERT! Worth every penny.

wonderfull
A very good, sweet and emotional music DVD. The simplicity ot the artists gives a feeling that you will never forget. Each note of music enter in your body and your soul in order to resound in yourself.

Outstanding
I checked out The Swell Season at Bonnaroo this year and they blew me away with their rich and finely textured songs. This live performance captures the same spirit, in a sonically richer environment. Highly recommended to any fan of fabulous songwriting and beautiful harmony and melody.
