The Other Journey
Growing up in the Bay Area in the 70's, like other reviewers, I was familiar with Journey's older material from the get-go, and because of that, I have never embraced their later material. It just sounds too bubble-gum. I never saw them in concert, but their stuff was played all over the place (parties, etc.). I have all three of their early stuff on LPs and CDs, and one of my favorite things to do is play them for people who have never heard them before. You play the CD, and they always say they've never heard it before, but they like it! What I don't understand is why this stuff never gets any airplay on so-called "classic rock" stations. I'm sure that listeners wouldn't mind. If you like progressive or fusion, or even just good old rock and roll, you will like "Journey" (as well as "Look Into The Future" and "Next"), and you will be astounded at how different it sounds from the "Perry Era" material. The musicianship on the earlier albums is much more pronounced than on the later ones. Many of the songs start out slow and finish with a mind-scrambling instrumental jam. In fact this album has two instrumental tracks on it (Kohoutek and Topaz). Buy this album, and the other two as well, and you will not be disappointed.

A Very Different Journey From The Hit-Making Band
Journey's self-titled debut, and the two follow-ups before the band added vocalist Steve Perry and went mainstream, shows a band with roots in artists as diverse as Leon Russell, Santana, Joe Cocker, the Allman Brothers Band, Steely Dan, the Grateful Dead, Genesis, the James Gang, the Meters, Little Feat, Booker T. & the MGs, Humble Pie, Yes, the Marshall Tucker Band, Traffic, Grand Funk Railroad, Chicago, Rare Earth, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. These songs blend jazz-rock fusion, blues-rock, R&B, hard rock, and progressive rock in a totally unique way that will always sound fresher than the later hit-period albums. Buy this CD along with LOOK INTO THE FUTURE and NEXT, and you won't be disappointed.

Dear Amazon: Can I give this 6 stars? I hereby do such: ****** In 1973, I think it was, Journey came to Hawaii and performed at a local "Battle of the Bands" contest in a tiny venue called Andrews Amphitheater. I was there and I will never ever forget that night as long as I live. They did this on purpose to test out the material for this album on a small audience. They had not yet released the album and nobody had ever even heard of these guys. They came on last, at about 8:00 in the evening, after a day of mediocre local garage bands dueled it out. What happened then was beyond any superlatives I can think of. I cannot begin to described the state of utter awe and amazement that struck everyone there that night. It goes without saying they blew all the local bands who had played that day off the stage; they then blew everybody in the audience completely away, everybody listening outside who didn't buy a ticket, as well as all the passersby who didn't even know what was going on. I was close to the stage, and after they were done, I shouted to Neil "Hey, how making an album!" and he smiled and replied "Iya, or two or three, hopefully!" Fateful words indeed. Here, now, in 2008, that night remains the single most memorable magical musical experience I have ever had. If any of you Amazon readers were also there, chime in, I'd like to hear from you. What a pity they went off in their pop direction, and ruined what could have been one of the greatest bands of all time.

Perry journey can't match the power of THIS Journey!
Wow. After purchasing Time 3 back in the nineties and hearing the stuff Journey did pre-Perry, I was curious enough to go out and buy the cassette versions (remember those?) of Journey's self-titled album, Look Into The Future, and Next. The self-titled debut featured George Tickner on rhythm guitar, and was different from anything I had ever heard the AOL-friendly Journey do. Nothing came close to this tight powerhouse playing, and before long I had worn my copy of the self-titled album out from too many plays. Kohoutek and Topaz are instrumental numbers where fire sizzles out of Neal Schon's pickups. Ross Valory and Aynsley Dunbar provide a rock-solid rhythm section, and Gregg Rolie shines on his vocal tracks, as well as providing some nicely placed Hammond B3 or Fender Rhodes piano. Not your mama's Journey!

it's here where they live up to the name "Journey"
For those of you familiar with the Steve Perry version of Journey only (which means, 90% of you) Journey's first album will come as a complete shock upon first listen, I bet. This album is mostly centered around extremely heavy guitar soloing, delicate instrumental bits, and heavy guitar riffs and catchy choruses. Sometimes the guitar riffs can be as heavy as Black Sabbath, and some of the guitar soloing seriously borders on extreme (Mahavishnu Orchestra-like extreme). "Kohoutek" and "Topaz" are must hear songs for anyone who's curious about the early bands sound and style. MUCH different from the radio hits you've been exposed to. A really fantastic listen and a must own.
