J.R. Richards's tenor voice oscillates between the silky ease of one who knows the girls in the audience will be drying their eyes and the disgruntled ache of a teenager who's just been grounded. He plays both of these aspects well throughout Opaline, lending his voice greater ve...

And You Think You Know What Life's About

Southern California's Dishwalla are a lot like a serial killer. A la the most cunning sociopath, the group disguises dark intentions in a swirling head-swim of charming guitar notes and a volley of regular-joe vocals. It's music that fits right into a crowded playlist (witness t...

Dishwalla: Live - Greetings From the Flow State

Between the fall of 2001 and summer of 2003, Dishwalla went on tour to promote their 2002 release Opaline. Produced by Gregg Wattenberg (Five For Fighting) and recorded in Los Angeles, the album proved relentless on the radio airwaves with the Top 20 hit, "Somewhere In The Middle...

If R.E.M. hadn't already blazed the trail years ago, Vertical Horizon's Everything You Want would be a seminal album, with its earnest harmonies, fluid melodies, and jangly guitars. And while Vertical Horizon may not have taken many forks off the road to Athens, they have whipped...

Who We Are is another set of rousing anthems from this reflective trio. On their fourth full-length, the Los Angeles three-piece sets the template for a harder-rocking effort with dynamic opener "Disarray," in which singer/guitarist Jason Wade admits he doesn't know where he's go...

Reviews:

From 'something special' to 'just like everyone else.'
I was so excited about Dishwalla releasing a new album that I ran out and bought it as soon as it arrived in the store. I put it in my portable CD player and expected it to be there for the next month, at least. It didn't even last a few days before it was back in the case, sitting on my counter. Maybe I was guilty of expecting it to sound like, oh...I don't know...like Dishwalla. I read somewhere that this was supposed to be 'the sound of Dishwalla,' of the pinnacle of their style and music. But this album is, simply put, just like everything else out there. The tracks are bland and not memorable. The lyrics seemed forced. There's too much obvious synth. I nearly clawed my ears out when I heard Creeps in the Stone...my musical knowledge isn't as good as it should be, but at 2:36, that sound, reminds me very much of classic rock...which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but definitely NOT Dishwalla. As for Collide? It's the blandest track on there, and unfortunately, it seems like the one track they had the most hope for. It sounds like stereotypically mass produced radio music. The negative being said, I did enjoy a few tracks, those being Winter Sun and Above the Wreckage. These are a bit closer to that Dishwalla sound I came to love. Dynamic, memorable, and with substance. I only hope that if they make another album, they return to whatever inspiration hit them before. I still consider Opaline to be the height of their music.

Why Dishwalla, why?
Some minor changes in the sound, and suddenly the magic is gone. i don't like the way that this album sounds, and I didn't even finish litening to be honest. There are som many good albums out there, some of them Dishwalla, that I simply don't have the time to listen to this. Please Dishwalla, make it better next time, as good as I know you can do!

I Was Blown Away!!!
When I saw that Dishwalla had this CD out a while back, I decided to listen to it simply because i had nothing better to do. To my utter shock, it blew me away! Dishwalla is a good bad and their previous releases have been pretty good, but unlike their other cd's this one hit and kept hitting. It's been a while since I've heard it, but I can't recall a single track that I don't like off of this relaes. Someday I'll by this one because it is definitely worth it.

Dishwalla Rocks!
Dishwalla are the type of "song crafters" that are hard to find in popular music. I truly enjoy this release just as much as the others. I find that this group's CDs are the type you can listen all the way through without skipping tracks like many others. The album fits nicely together. I write this review in the hope that you too will discover the blend of eclectic joy this band offers. BUY IT NOW - What are you waiting for? And buy another one too - you can get the free shipping and have two great Dishwalla albums!!!

Dishwalla is BACK!!!
I have all their previous stuff and this new album is a cut above the rest. It's really good. JR Richards voice is sounding as great as ever, and what a unique voice he has, simply inspiring. The Tracks to look out for are: Collide(the Hit), Above the Wreckage(My favorite), 40 Stories and Bleeding Out are out of this world. The entire CD is first class from start to finish. Resounding melodies and lyrics that are heart felt and sort of touches your soul. What more can you ask of any band but to touch one's soul with the world's language .....Great Music. Please buy this CD you WILL NOT regret it, I promise. May Dishwalla put out a few more albums to inspire and sooth us all for the foreseeable future. Ed
