Reviews:
Very, very good buy This is a great product for everyone from hard core fans to people who simply heard a couple of their songs on the radio. Great set list, superb photography and composition. There are also some good interviews between songs. An all around quality product. An incredible view into one of the world's best live bands! I am a hardcore Pearl Jam fan. Own all imaginable albums, DVDs, and other goodies associated with the band. I've also been to 6 live performances over the years. That being said, this DVD is an incredibly accurate substitute for tickets to the front row of a Pearl Jam concert. With the stunning images and the amazing sound on the DVD, you really feel like you are at the concert.
With the crowd singing all around you, you sit on your couch, but feel as if you're in the middle of a huge crowd in the middle of an Italian "piazza", or square. However, all the music is trumped by the in-between scenes, showing the band members outside of the concert hall and doing "regular things". McCready and Vedder playing on some ancient Italian structure, Ament skateboarding in some small Italian playground, and local Italians playing "Porch" in honor of this beloved band. Most importantly, seeing the best frontman of our generation, Eddie Vedder, behind the scenes, where he is able to leak out just some of the most coveted insights in rock, is priceless. With his unmatched respect to classic rock, shown through the band's extensive list of covered songs, Vedder links the older rock scene with today's.
This DVD is a must buy for the Pearl Jam fan, and for the casual fan would offer a spectacular insight into possibly the most influential band in the last 20 years. Intimate concert with my favorite band It was like I was standing in the crowd in Italy. Great made DVD and the band is better than ever. A casual fan says... it ROCKS! As a guitar player, my only gripe is that McReady plays his strat on only a few of the tunes shown here... I swear to the maker he's just more of an animal when he straps that beat-up old instrument on. But that aside, Vedder is and has been king of lead singers for the past decade or so: excellent stage presence with a humble and heartfelt demeanor and always a clever way of phrasing his thoughts... (as if people aren't aware of that by now).
I'm very much a hard rock / screaming guitar fan, but Pearl Jam has grown on me over the years. Despite that this is only the 2nd item of theirs I've purchased (the other being Ten, go figure). What I like about this is it's for the most part songs that even casual fans will recognize, and for the most part they're all up tempo tunes, except for one or two, which happen to be among their most clutch and timeless numbers so are welcome additions even for casual fans.
It's not one concert beginning to end, which sometimes is preferable, but the way they put it together, going from town to town and discussing more of what goes on behind the scenes: it's really an excellent DVD. Hard core fans will simply love it because you're wanting all that stuff. But as a casual fan, I can also say that aspect is not over the top: musically it absolutely rocks.
Well worth it I like this more every time I watch it. I only wish there were more songs on it. The music is great, the footage with band members talking and checking out Italy is great. |
