Living up to the moniker originally given them via a San Francisco radio contest, Journey traveled a restless, often less-than-promising arc as a prog-centric quartet during the early '70s. But the addition of Steve Perry's soaring tenor to the mix on 1978's Infinity instantly ch...

Reviews:

Classic Journey
This album Evolution is classic on two levels: It represents the rhythm and blues sound of Journey as a followup to Infinity, and for many who enjoy Gregg Rolie's contribution and sound to the band, that is complimented here on all tracks as well. I won't repeat what some of the aforementioned customer reviews have stated about their favorite tracks, Lovin'/Touchin'/Squeezin' and City Of The Angels, which I think are what makes the CD shine, but for me it's the lesser known tracks of Daydream, Sweet And Simple, and Lady Luck that make it a really good CD to own. Steve Perry does his "signature wail" on these tracks, and though the album may not have been as commercially successful as later albums or Infinity, it still stands on its own for taking you back to that time when these songs got heavy radio play. Journey fans can pick and choose which album or "era" of Journey they prefer, but there are a lot of fans young and old who are either just discovering this music or still currently love the sound of this CD as much as they did when it first came out. Journey has brand new younger fans because of this CD (and Infinity) alone. It's most definitely worth the price.

This is Journey's Best
Great rock with heart and soul. This one makes the very short list of music if I could only have 10 albums in my collection. The majority of today's noise that passes for music is disposable and forgettable. A great album is one you can listen to over and over. Great music does not display in-your-face anger, profanity or attitude.

A rather average offering from a stellar band
This 1979 album from Journey came from a group which had not yet reached their peak in terms of popularity. The album was, however, still snapped up, not least because of the hit "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", which showcased a bluesy side of the supergroup. The mid-tempo rocker "Do you Recall" is one of my faves, with a gritty sound that characterises much of Journey's work and, more generally, a lot of 70's rock. The album, in contrast to journey's 80's albums, is somewhat more guitar-oriented, evidenced by the catchy tune "Lovin' You is Easy". I can't understand why this wasn't a chart-topping hit at the time! In short, fans of Journey's early albums will love this release. However, if you are an ardent fan of the more processed/(over)produced/radio-friendly pop-rock seen in, for example, Raised on Radio, this will appeal less you you. While the musicianship is awesome (e.g. Neal Schon's guitar solo on "Lovin' You is Easy") I really don't like Gregg Rolie's vocals. A quick listen to the song "Just the Same Way", on which Steve Perry and Rolie share vocals, quickly highlights Rolie's inadequacy and poor range (he sounds almost monotonal). If you are a pop-rock fan, I would highly recommend albums like "Trial by Fire" and "Raised on Radio", both of which feature Johnathon Cain, a great songwriter and pianist. Both these albums are, thankfully, devoid of Rolie's uninspiring vocals.

More Steve Perry Role
Journey's fifth album in 1980 saw the more vocal role for Steve Perry, while in last album Infinity the vocal parts were shared by Gregg Rolie. Also Steve Perry particiated songwriting for most of the tracks meaning he was no longer "a new comer". The opening MAJESIC is the nice prelude retainig the progressive touch. TOO LATE and LOVING' TOUCHIN' SQUEEZIN' which became minor hits show Steve's passionate high-tone vocals quite well. CITY OF THE ANGELS is the mid-tempo well-written song which typifies post-Perry mellower more commercial Journey compared with progressive previous Journey. WHEN YOU'RE ALONE is again mellow side of Journey but with Steve Perry's vocal it even is forgivable. SWEET AND SIMPLE is a nice smooth ballad. LOVIN' YOU IS EASY is the well-timed rocker preventing the album from being dull. JUST THE SAME WAY is a Gregg-Steve duet. DO YOU RECALL is the recreation of earlier style Journey with Steve Perry vocal. DAYDREAM is an outstanding track with the excellent use of the synth. LADY LUCK closes the album with tight straight rock. Verdict: Mellower than previous album but more Steve Perry vocal is a boon to us. Rating: 90 out of 100 Steve Perry is more alive with his songwriting participation. Recommended for: any Steve Perry fans.
