Mojave
Mojave

Like a rustic version of the Tindersticks, Willard Grant Conspiracy croon soft songs about existential despair, crafting a worldview that balances Nietzsche with Bob Dylan on barbiturates. The downcast mood of tunes such as "Another Lonely Night" and the aptly titled "Love Has No...
Flying Low
Flying Low

He calls himself "Robert," but the Willard Grant Conspiracy singer-lyricist is obviously Nick Cave's long-lost twin brother. Imagine him stolen Stateside and reared in rural Massachusetts, host to most of Cave's eloquent sensualism but less of his suicidal romanticism and starchy...
Let It Roll
Let It Roll

Bandleader Robert Fisher doesn't just write about the corners of the soul where death, revenge, transcendence, and spiritual crisis confuse human will. On the Willard Grant Conspiracy's brilliant sixth album, Fisher conjures them in grand sonic chiaroscuro: bright and brooding te...
Regard the End
Regard the End

While lead singer and principal songwriter Robert Fisher is obsessed with folk archetypes--the drowned and the damned, murder-ballad ghosts, and gospel sojourners--and liberally taps traditional sources, these dark, forbidding songs aren't merely arcane or gothic. "Sufferings goi...

With Boxer, the National have reached four albums into their increasingly lauded career, never hurrying the tempo, never over-reaching in volume or instrumental density. Instead, the quintet's balanced on a pin, emotionally austere, if not utterly downhearted, finding brilliantly...

The Reminder

Feist is the solo project of Canada's Leslie Feist, a prolific artist who has also played in one capacity or another with Broken Social Scene, Kings of Convenience and half a dozen other bands. The Reminder, her third release, comes from the same well of quiet, appealing songwrit...

Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title...

Dirt Farmer

Levon Helm's early solo albums, made in the 1970s after the Band initially broke up, were hit-and-miss affairs, but his first solo studio release in 25 years represents a rich return to his Southern roots. With co-production and musical support from daughter Amy (of Ollabelle) a...

Reviews:

WGC keep delivering.
What a pleasure it has been to follow the progress of Willard Grant Conspiracy from the promising beginnings of their first record 'Flying Low', to see that promise delivered on '99's 'Mojave' to this, their latest and most fully formed album 'Everything's Fine'. Put simply, 'Everthing's Fine' is a glorious collection of songs which will have you hooked from the first play. The dynamics are the same, Robert Fisher's deep soulful voice over WGC's trademark lulling, melancholy guitars, however the sound is warmer and on songs such as 'Christmas In Nevada' and the soaring 'Kite Flying' you feel the undeniable pull of all the elements coming together to create this unique and poignant gem. Again, this is a pleasure to own.

A Perfect Blend of all Likes of Perfection
This is one of the greatest unheard of bands. Although this is not the best albulm the guys have produced it is definatley worth your money. Imagine yourself up in the mountains, during a heavy snowstorm, circled around the fire playing cards and drinking with your best buddies and girlfriends.

Definitely NOT the life of the party...
As I was meandering through a music store, randomly perusing through the new releases section... I heard "Notes From the Waiting Room" drifting from the store speakers. And I knew I had to have this CD. The rest of the songs were not bad, either! The melodious piano intros, the simplistic poetic lyrics and the small town feeling of WGC got me hooked. Some of the songs are a bit melancholy, folk-ish and maybe even twangy but that's the charm of these songs and why I like it. There are even interesting acoustic instruments that contribute to album, such as the banjo and the mandolin mixed in with the good ol' piano. "Hesitation" stand out as beautiful instumental piece, the dejected spirit of "Southbend of a Northbound Train" is strangely haunting and "The Beautiful Song" is quite catchy. I have warn you, it's not the most chipper or light-hearted cd... but still great stuff to listen to if you want to contemplate about life and other obscure things. This newest WGC cd and I are quite well acquainted in the wee hours of the morning.
