Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
The songs of Canadian band Great Big Sea are equal parts modern pop and rousing Dubliners-style Irish music. Road Rage is a live CD that was recorded over a three-month period in front of a series of large and enthusiastic audiences. The tracks include some of the band's most popular songs such as "When I'm Up," "Everything Shines," and "Consequence Free," which the band performs energetically on acoustic guitars, fiddles, flutes, and bodhrans. Also included are modern arrangements of old Irish songs like "Old Black Rum," "I'm a Rover," and "General Taylor," which feature some nice harmony singing from the band and lusty backing vocals from the crowd. If you've seen Great Big Sea in concert, Road Rage will stand as an excellent memento of the show. And if you've never heard or seen them before, this live CD is a great introduction to their exciting contemporary Celtic music. --Michael Simmons

Reviews:

GBS - Road Rage
This disc was my 1st introduction to Great Big Sea. I LOVED IT !!! After virturally wearing this disc out I went to a GBS concert in Toronto and was blown away. "Road Rage" catches a goodly sum of the fun and energy of the band and crowd interaction... but seeing them LIVE is just incredible! If you can't see GBS in concert, put in "Road Rage" dance a lil' jig and sing yourself silly! If you like a lil' Irish flavor in your musice, this is a must have. Great Big Sea... just great!

Lots of fun, but a little too "live" for my tastes
Containing many of Great Big Sea's best songs, including the hard to find "Donkey Riding", this is fun, high quality CD. It gives an excellent collection of both traditional Irish Folksongs and new composistions by the artists and allows you to listen to some well done artist/audience interaction. Unfortunately, sometimes this interaction takes over. GBS winds up shouting to get the audience's attention or cheering momentarily out-powers the music. In one song, "General Taylor", the group seems to spend most of their time introducing the song and butchering the end of it in order to get more audience response. Also, the CD's quality fades a little sometimes. This is probably do to collecting the tracks from so many different recordings. Besides these faults the CD is still a lot of fun and interesting mix of good times and songs. Created as a celebration of the end of the millennium, it certainly captures the rollicking feel of both most of the music and the deep, quiet emotions of some of the other songs , such as "Turn". It's a good buy, with all that audience screaming, not something I'd listen to daily.

Rev it Up, Eh?
I have a problem with GBS. They are best enjoyed live. If you see them live (and you should), you will notice that no one at a GBS concert remains on their feet for long. I thought this might not be true south of the border here, but in jolly old Ann Arbor this spring everyone (but me) was just as vertical as they get in Vancouver and Saskatchewan. Being a li'l Rock & Roller of round shape and of Boomeresque age, I am limited in how much time I can stand and dance(although I envy those who can do it through the whole show). So it is a very sad li'l Rock & Roller indeed, who finally gets to see her heros, only to get glimpses of them through the forests of people ahead. At least I have my Road Rage CD!!!!! These guys truly do put on a good show, all kidding aside, and I have found their live recordings to be superior to the others, partly because they seem to have more fun than just about anyone else when they are performing. A little traditional Newfoundland, a little Celtic, a little rock, some Sea Shanties, and away we goooooooo....

Best of the best and a good place to start
This album was my first exposure to the magnificent Great Big Sea, and while I've enjoyed their other recordings, they've yet to top this. After "Road Rage" had been in my CD player for only a year, I drove five hours to hear this Newfoundland band open for another group I cared nothing for - and I have to say that the recording very accurately reflects the excitement and energy of this racously fun band. Most of the album is taken up with exuberant, fast, traditional drinking songs and chanties, but interspersed are tender love ballads ("Boston and St. Johns") and humorous but thoughtful commentaries on life ("Consequence Free"). This is one of my favorite finds of the past five years; unless your ears are easily burned by slightly earthy/dark humor, I can't recommend it highly enough!

one of the best live albums I've ever heard
But it doesn't compare to seeing them live. They absolutely blew me out of the water. That notwithstanding, this is the only live album I own that I listen to on a consistent basis. It's a greatest hits live, really, but that doesn't really say much, considering all the material these guys had compiled up until the point of this recording was brilliant. I drove to Canada from Bucksport, ME just to get it two weeks early. Check out a map for that distance. I was not disappointed by my effort. A wonderful recording.
