Reviews:
Great Anthology From An Artist Who Should be Recording More Carlene:
We miss you! And this great anthology of your work only makes us miss you more. When you sing "I Fell In Love," "Every Little Thing," and "Me and The Wildwood Rose," your fans miss you that much more. So much talent, great song choice, and a rocking, country playfulness that has huge crossover appeal are reasons for you to get back in the studio and put your personal problems behind you.
Carlene, Hindsight is 20/20. Look ahead to the rest of your life and great career, and make new music soon! A Sweety Meant To Be Carlene Carter, you guessed it, daughter of the late/great June Carter Cash. Is a Sweety meant to be. Carlene's down home Carter drawl, mixed with her rockabilly, is undinably THE SWEETEST THING. I FELL IN LOVE with her voice when I heard a friend sing CRY, ultimately my favorite C.C. song. ME AND THE WILDWOOD ROSE, written for her sister Rosey Carter, for their childhood growing up with the famous Carter family, they didn't have fabulous tour busses back then, so they traveled in their car, listening to their mother and their ancestors singing. Later Carlene would team up with English rocker Dave Edmunds, in BABY RIDE EASY. And NEVER TOGETHER BUT CLOSE SOMETIMES, written by musician Rodney Crowell. I LOVE YOU 'CAUSE I WANT TO written by Carlene and Radney Foster (one half of Foster and Lloyd) TRUST YOURSELF by another famous musician, Bob Dylan. CHANGE, but I wouldn't have CHANGEd a thing on this cd. One song for each year that Carlene has been in the busniess of selling records. She dedicates this album to the loves of her life, her children, Tiffany Anastasia Lowe, and John Jackson Routh. So blow outta here like a HURRICANE and buy this cd. Or if you have it already.. (in the words of Carlene herself).. Turn up that MUSIC!! A Must For Fans Grab this collection while you can, it looks like we may not be hearing anything new from Miss Carter for quite some time. Drugs took her longtime boyfriend Howie Epstein last year, after they'd reportedly been caught in a stolen vehicle. Then she lost her sister Rosie (drug paraphernalia found in the bus that Rosie was living in) and of course Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash all in the same year. News in early 2004 had Carlene back in jail for theft and drugs, and reports are that she looks like a mere shadow of her former self. This may be the last chance to sample some great work from one of country's discarded gems. Carlene Looking Back 20/20 Hindsight is just that: a retrospective of the music Carlene Carter recorded until 1996. This CD collection is worth every cent you pay for it and more many times over. At her worst Carlene is good . . . at her best she's earth shattering! She can rock with such electricity that your ears can't believe what they're hearing. And she can quiet down to the most sensitive heartbreak songs ever.My favorites on the album are: "One Tender Night" - "Unbreakable Heart" - "Seetest Thing" -and "Easy From Now On". But every track has its own personality and magic.Any regrets with this CD? Yes . . . I wish it had included "Something Already Gone" (from the 'Maverick' soundtrack). But we can't get everything we want on one CD -- but this collection contains most.Carlene hasn't put any CD's out since this collection. I hope she returns to recording again soon. The world of music . . .and of "country music" needs her. But "Thanks Carlene" for all the tracks you have already given us . . .they are great . . .as are you. Enigmatic genius delivers great rocking country At her best, Carlene was a match for all her rivals. The evidence for this is the album I fell in love, a hard rocking country album from 1990, the like of which I don't ever expect to be matched. It is one of my all-time favorites in any genre of music. The follow-up to that album was released in 1993. Little love letters was another excellent album, but was predominately filled with ballads, demonstrating that Carlene didn't have to rock hard to deliver great music. This compilation shows just how good those two albums are. I fell in love is represented here by the title track, Come on back, Me and the wildwood rose (one of my all-time favorite songs, it is about her childhood times with mother, June Carter Cash, and her Grandma, Mother Maybelle Carter) and The sweetest thing.Little love letters is represented by Sweet meant to be, Every little thing, Unbreakable heart and I love you `cause I want to.The next album, Little acts of treason from 1995, is represented by He will be mine, Hurricane and Change. In its way, that was an excellent album, but suffered by comparison with its two predecessors. As far as I know, Carlene has not recorded an album since then.Of the older tracks, Baby ride easy, a duet with Welsh rocker Dave Edmunds from 1980, is another brilliant song. The other oldies are also enjoyable, if not quite up to the quality of the best tracks. As a career-spanning compilation, this is excellent, but the original albums I fell in love and Little love letters are even better. |
