Live It Out

Toronto's Metric has the ability to appeal to fans on a number of levels: the group captures the likeability of Elastica with the cheekiness of Blondie and then mixes that new wave style with just enough of a growling guitar to give it some oomph. Since their last release, the ac...

What Is Free to a Good Home?

A companion piece to Knives Don't Have Your Back, this EP consists of five new songs and a remix. The mellow trumpets opening "Rowboat" signify that this is not the detached new-wave-inspired rock of Metric or the sprawling experimentation of Broken Social Scene. The album is lar...

Something happened to Spoon between records five and six--they got big. It's not as if these unprepossessing Texans were unpopular before, but after Gimme Fiction, their music was everywhere. There was Britt Daniel, who has since moved to Oregon, singing karaoke on cult favorite ...

It's hard to follow up the record that made you famous. For many artists, that's their first album, and the disappointing results are termed the "sophomore slump." Luckily, Tegan and Sara's star-making Juno-nominated album, So Jealous, was their fourth--and their fifth album, The...

Pay no attention to the reviews that imply the New Pornographers have "grown up" or "matured" or "drifted away" from the perfect-pop promise of their first three records. For if you throw darts at the songs on Challengers, an ambitious soundscape that had members of the all-star ...

Reviews:

Metric continues with a solid album
Not as good as Old World Underground, Metric stays true to their signature style with this pop laced album. Vocals and producing are solid. The song styles are a bit more varied across the board here, which makes it a little less cohesive than I've come to expect.

An oldie, but a goodie.
I was pleasently surprised with this album. Track number 3, "Rock me Now" has got to be my favorite! Highly recommended to any degree of Metric fan.

grow up and blow away
This album was recorded before either live it out or old world and sounds much more soft and poppy. Songs like parkdale will put you in a trance, man. The lyrics are also much more varied and spacey, compared to the focused "political" influences on the newer material.

Different sound
Though this certainly isn't my favorite album for Metric, it is definitely worth buying. The sound is different and for me it reflects more of the sound for then. Tracks like "Hardwire" are beyond catchy but don't let the lighter tunes fool you! The lyrics (perhaps not as obviously political) still have meaning and aren't just pointless words like songs today.

Drum Machine?
Really, they use the drum machine, but it actually sounds great. Because of that, and the fact that it was recorded so long ago (1999? 2000?), it sounds a bit different from the modern Metric style, but it's still so great. They also explore genres like jazz ("Raw Sugar") and a lot of the album has a bit of hip hop in it.
