Reviews:
A great concert album Amazing and swinging, Dee Dee Bridgewater really shines on the live albums I have heard so far!
Competent enough in singing various jazz styles, here she even tackles Jobim's "How insensitive" (although it is not the peak performance of the album: she's perhaps too hot to handle Jobim's gentle touch).
But her Horace Silver medley is, I believe, superior to her later album devoted the composer's works and, between that medley, "Just Friends", and "Night in Tunisia" it's hard for me to pick the favorite number.
But, to be honest, I am a Dee Dee fan... Terrific live album! So many live albums sound like muffled, hard-to-hear, jumbled messes. But this one transports you there! You really feel like you're part of the crowd. What a great performer. If only I could see her for real! You should also check out "Live at Yoshi's" - another truly great disc! Dee Dee Bridgewater and her band in harmony Dee Dee Bridgewater and her excellent band capture the life experience of the fantastic Montreaux concert on this lovely album. Those who have seen the concert probably already have this album, if not, they should get it. For those who havn't seen the concert, this album can give a lovely glimpse at Dee Dee Bridgewaters incredible performing style. Even on this recording, you can feel her presence, her wonderful connection to the audience and her exquisite handling of the band. The band in turn is a blessing to Ms. Bridgewater's voice and energy, and is probably among the finest you can hear these days. |
