Prodcut Description: [More Information ...] In this literary tour de force, novelist Arthur Golden enters a remote and shimmeringly exotic world. For the protagonist of this peerlessly observant first novel is Sayuri, one of Japan's most celebrated geisha, a woman who is both performer and courtesan, slave and goddess. We follow Sayuri from her childhood in an impoverished fishing village, where in 1929, she is sold to a representative of a geisha house, who is drawn by the child's unusual blue-grey eyes. From there she is taken to Gion, the pleasure district of Kyoto. She is nine years old. In the years that follow, as she works to pay back the price of her purchase, Sayuri will be schooled in music and dance, learn to apply the geisha's elaborate makeup, wear elaborate kimono, and care for a coiffure so fragile that it requires a special pillow. She will also acquire a magnanimous tutor and a venomous rival. Surviving the intrigues of her trade and the upheavals of war, the resourceful Sayuri is a romantic heroine on the order of Jane Eyre and Scarlett O'Hara. And Memoirs of a Geisha is a triumphant work - suspenseful, and utterly persuasive. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Reviews:
Great, but God It Goes On and On Memoirs of a Geisha is a truly remarkable novel on so many levels. It is extremely well written, and researched. And, that the author is a man writing in a Japenese woman's voice makes it even more remarkable. I have always wondered about the whole Geisha thing. I now feel like I know more about it, though I still don't understand some things like why was the title character so tightly tied to the Mother character even after she was an extremely succesful Geisha. All of the above aside, I did not find the book "enthralling" as did the cited USA Today reviewer. Maybe because it is at its core one of those "relationship" novels that some readers love, I had trouble maintaining interest. It does go on and on and on over whether the Sayuri will ever find happiness. I would have preferred it to be some hundred pages shorter. So, if you like intensely written relationships novels, or if you want to know everything but were afraid to ask about Geishas, then this is one for you. Otherwise, you might think twice before getting involved in it. Kindle Book Review Memoirs of a Geisha is one of my new favorite Kindle books that I have read and the imagery is amazing in that novel. The characterization of all the characters are well thought out and applied gracefully. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to renting the movie now to see if it is just as good or not. Piece of crap Better than Twilight, but still one of the worst books I have even read. It advertises itself as historical or realistic fiction, it's neither. People use this as an accurate account of a geisha's life, but it's full of lies and slander. Review Shipping was good. Item in good condition, though there was only one mark on the book.
Amazing I bought this book in Saudi Arabia. I didn't expect to find such a book in there.
Talks about the Japanese culture and war while the focus is on the life of a Japanese woman and how she sells her virginity to who pays more.
This book was made into movie and starred by Zhang Ziyi. |
