My Fair Lady is--deservedly--one of the most famous musicals of all time. Its popular 1964 film version, directed by George Cukor, has ensured that for most people Audrey Hepburn is Eliza Doolittle, while Broadway-heads swear by Julie Andrews's stage performance, immortalized on the 1956 cast album. Of course, for the purposes of a CD review it's more accurate to compare the performances of Andrews and Marni Nixon, who sang the songs lip-synched by Hepburn in the movie. While Andrews usually comes out on top (especially on "I Could Have Danced All Night"), Nixon is no slouch (after all, she also dubbed Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Deborah Kerr in The King & I). Rex Harrison, of course, does his own vocals, but then he doesn't so much sing his songs as talk them. While Nixon and Harrison are tops, the truth is that Lerner and Loewe's songs are so good as to endure almost anybody's interpretation: "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," "With a Little Bit of Luck," "On the Street Where You Live," "Get Me to the Church on Time," and so on--not many shows can boast as many classics. The movie version's real bonus is Andre Previn's swellegant orchestration. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

The songs stand on their own
Many people can associate this sound track with the movie, "My Fair Lady" that was that is a film version of Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion". This is a classic musical with many well known songs by Lerner and Loewe.
However unlike many musicals the songs have a life of their own. Even though they matched the story perfectly, they are they type of songs that one could instantly blurt out in the thrill of the moment. I my self found that "On the Street Where you live" matched perfectly when I was in love in my youth.
Loves Show Tunes!
I'm one of those people who ADORES show tunes--call me crazy but that's who I am! This CD presents ALL the songs from the 1969 hit movie, "My Fair Lady" with Audrey Hepburn (my fave!) and Rex Harrison. It makes me happy to listen to it, especially when I am sick of the news and need to LIGHTEN UP! If you like show tunes, musicals, and songs from yesteryear, you'll love it. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. Also good for lovers of this particular movie, as the songs summarize the story line from beginning to end. My Fair Lady

I love, love,love this cd!The songs are just as I remember in the movie, with all the background scene noise behind. If you liked the movie you are going to like the cd. Audrey Hepburn!
