One Day As a Lion - One Day As a Lion (EP)
One Day As a Lion (2008, Anti) One Day As a Lion's first studio EP. **** For a long time there was talk of Zack de la Rocha releasing solo material (apparently material he had been working on even before Rage Against the Machine split), and even more talk when he worked with Trent Reznor. But now we get some sort of taste of what de la Rocha is like on his own, but he equally shares the stage with Jon Theodore, former Mars Volta drummer. As expected, One Day As a Lion is explosive, with de la Rocha spitting hateful messages at the powers-that-be while taking a minimalist effect. The idea is fantastic; Theodore's drumming is superb, playing a central role in not only developing an effective beat, but also being fairly responsible for filling the sound, as de la Rocha's vocals and keyboards are either sparse or start-and-stop. Sure, it sounds like lost Rage material, but it's fairly intimate for what it is, and what it is is righteous. A full-length LP would be outstanding. On it, boys! (Wild International)

Zack De LaRocha
Zack still has the fire but was not sure of the message, I am a fan of RATM so I would always support Zack and his music. I enjoyed track one and three but if it wa anyone else I would not have bought. It was the same with Night Watchman of Tom Morrello from RATM but that was on the Dylan side of music.

Right on course
The re-emergence of Zack de la Rocha has been something I have kept close track to. From the work on In the Møde to Saul Williams to the work with DJ Shadow, Zack has laid low since the dividing of Rage Against the Machine 8 years ago. While I could continue to go on a personal note and discuss how important Rage and Zack were to my budding musical ears, this review will focus more on the music and the work of two important talents. De La Rocha's talents have always been understated but publicly acclaimed, always capable of a line or two that never leaves your head. Jon Theodore has always been considered one of the best drummers yet this improvised blend of rock and hip hop speaks volumes to how even in simplicity, complexity can be attained. Ok, so one little Rage allusion: if anything, this record shows Zack's influence in Rage as being more than just a lyricist. The perseverance of gritty style and minimalist aggression is very much encapsulated in this record. Instead of falling into abstract musical ideas, a focused, cohesive work is presented here, just unpolished enough to keep your feet cemented to the pavement. "If You Fear Dying" pulses like a hot summer day, seething through the synths and burgeoning drums. "Ocean View" comes in like a buzz saw, while "Wild International" takes early 90s hip hop drums and a radio hum. This project unifies two voices and cannot be categorized in any simple terms, but then again, isn't that the point? One Day as a Lion does let its members have their respective roars, but unified, the project speaks volumes great start of something, I hope to see more. Pick it up for a taste of what might emerge, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I think this is fantastic from beginning to end. The more I listen the better each tract becomes. I can of course hear some RATM, but this is something new. Zac's pairing with Jon Phillip was an excellent choice. We knew the vacals would be great, but the drums add an element that is beyond RATM. I just feel sorry for Mars Volta. Their best assets has moved on to bigget and better things!!!
