Prodcut Description: [More Information ...] Jack Kerouac was a literary rock star, lionized by his fans. He was called the avatar of the Beat Movement, a new voice of his generation. But along with sudden fame and media hype came his unraveling. The new film, One Fast Move or I'm Gone- Kerouac's Big Sur, takes us back to the cabin he retreated to in the Big Sur woods, the Beat haunts of San Francisco and New York City for an unflinching look at the compelling events his book is based on. The story unfolds through Kerouac's prose, first-hand recollections from Kerouac's contemporaries, as well as writers, poets, actors and musicians who have been deeply influenced by Kerouac's unique gifts.Appearing in the film are Sam Shepard, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, S.E. Hinton, Donal Logue, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Robert Hunter and many more. The stunning, High Definition visual imagery is set to original music composed and performed by recording artists Jay Farrar of Son Volt and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie.Gibbard stayed in Big Sur to compose songs for his band's 2008 Grammy-nominated album, Narrow Stairs. For many years, Jay Farrar's songwriting has been inspired and influenced by Kerouac's compositional style. Gibbard and Farrar, having never previously met, discovered a mutual kinship in their passion for Kerouac's work while recording several songs for the documentary, produced by Kerouac Films. After the initial San Francisco recording session in July 2007, they decided to develop the project further to create an album using Kerouac's own words from the book as the lyrics.

Reviews:
One Fast Move or I'm Gone - review There are several interwoven aspects to "One Fast Move or I'm Gone." Foremost, it's a documentary that recreates a physical canvas for Jack Kerouac's book `Big Sur." Jack wrote this as he was struggling with his overwhelming fame and doing battle with a deep and destructive alcohol addiction. There are many players providing commentary, some of them great artists in there own right - Tom Waits, Patti Smith, many with great insight, and others with interesting details - and some who come across as simply energetic fans. But there are genuinely important figures too, those very close to Jack - Carolyn Cassady, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (who still lives in the Big Sur cabin, which served as home base for the book), and Michael McClure. Ultimately, the content of the book is what drives the film. Actor John Ventimiglia reads several passages; his ability to recreate the vocal accent, inflections, and tone of Kerouac is uncanny, which adds to the intensity of the film. This true story is an authentic, often excruciating, narration about the depths of Kerouac's pain and despair, and the emotional calm of his redemption. A must have for any Kerouac fan The album is just beautiful start to finish but the real gem is the DVD documentary included... I picked up this set as well as a copy of Big Sur which I re-read prior to watching the DVD. A must have for any Kerouac cuckoo still out there.... Instant Classic This is one of those records that people with great tastes should own. With Kerouac + Gibbard + Farrar in one record, you just know it's going to be well worthwhile. So, if you like indie alt-country music, I'm quite sure you'll love this. Great record You'd expect it to suck.
Most concept albums suck.
Most side projects suck.
Most soundtrack albums suck.
This is a great record. An anassuming and earnest little masterpiece One fast move needs time Here is the folk soundtrack for the film, "One Fast Move or I'm Gone"- based on Jack Kerouac's trip to Big Sur and writings done there. Some critics are upset this isn't jazz as Kerouac came out of the Beat generation but I think this is a brilliant interpretation. Jay Farrar of Son Volt and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie were both already familiar with Kerouac's writings when they put Kerouac's words to their original music. Big Sur may be one of Kerouac's darkest works but there is light to be found. There is optimism in the rhythm and slide guitar's mood on #6 "These Roads Don't Move" as I listened to Gibbard sings a line from the end of the novel, "Something good will come of all things yet." I loved the title track #8. Sometimes the lyrics sound forced (#9) but I enjoyed this cd and look forward to the movie. NO 12 is the only track with the F word. |
