Deconstruction [ENHANCED CD]

When Meredith Brooks broke through with her 1997 single "Bitch," you could pretty much cut the irony with a knife: a song that was meant to show off her multidimensionality (as well as that of all women) instead became a song that defined her, and in many ways limited her. With D...
Shine
Shine

With Shine, fans awaiting a new Meredith Brooks CD are in for a letdown, but not because the music isn't great. The trouble here is that Shine is really Bad Bad One, Brooks' 2002 release, reshuffled--song for song everything is the same, only the new title track takes prominence ...

See It Through My Eyes

Before she became a recording sensation and a dyed-in-the-wool member of the Lilith Fair sisterhood (thanks to her 1996 Everywoman anthem, Bitch), Oregon-born Meredith Brooks was an aspiring rocker plying her trade with a variety of Northwestern bands. She tried her hand at recor...

File under "Angry Young Women." Following the likes of Fiona Apple and Alanis Morrisette in line for the confessional, Meredith Brooks became yet another female rocker exposing and expressing her emotions strongly. "Bitch," with its chorus ("I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child...

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

When Alanis Morissette visited Mother India in 1997, she gained new composure and, in a state of numinous bliss, wrote 17 songs for Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, each suffused with the search for enlightenment and self-knowledge. To the likely dismay of many fans, Morissett...

Reviews:

A rock album for grown-ups.
"Bad, Bad One", is the original and I think the better version of the album "Shine" This album is filled with thoughtful, well written songs of love and pain that make up the lives of adults. Maybe that is the reason that this album has not done better financially, as music sales and radio always seem to be geared toward the teen market. I, for one, love this album, I have bought several copies myself and given them to friends going through different emotional issues as a form of therapy for them. It has one of the most romantic songs ever to me in the song "Stand", what we really want from those we love. So...if you would like a great album for grown up issues, and if you don't have "Shine" already, get yourself a copy of "Bad, Bad One" and enjoy.

Bad Bad One indeed!
Meredith can't sing and her music is so trite it's pathetic. I can't believe any majob label wants her on their roster. The only half decent thing she put out was that lame Alanis Morissette [...]

great stuff
i love meredith brooks. she is a great singer and writes great songs. i hope she releases a new CD soon.

This album goes nowhere
I don't really think anyone was checking for Meredith Brooks after her 1997 hit, and her latest album doesn't really do much either. The title says it best: this album really is a Bad Bad One.The first song, "Crazy", is just that, especially the background vocals. The backup singers don't fare much better elsewhere on the album, as evidenced on the lazy "Lucky Day" and the trite "Shine". And the lyrics aren't brilliant either. Most of these songs feel like they were written in five minutes...TOTAL. On the title track, you'll hear Meredith saying things like, "I wouldn't blame you if you tried to hang me." Whoa. That's a little too dark, don't you think?Another flaw is the production, because a lot of the songs toward the beginning of the album have music we've heard several times before. In fact, the only really decent song on here is "Where Lovers Meet", but even that song suffers from cheesy lyrics. In the end...is this album worth picking up? In the words of her song "High", "no, no, no, no, no."

A Bold Step For Our Ms Brooks...
"Blurring The Edges" had kind of an "edge" to it and Meredith got our attention with her first big hit, (you know the one), and "Deconstruction" showed us not so much a soft side as much as an honest one, and I was impressed. The music was tight and energetic. On "Bad Bad One", she gets right to the point of her feelings through her writing, and the song titles tell alot. You know what the songs are going to be about and sometimes even how they will feel, because Meredith hides nothing. I respect her more as a songwriter here and now because she can express herself without using vulgarity in her descriptions or language, and we can still relate (even if I am a guy). I have listened to this only twice and I know the above "4" will probably go up to a "5". My only-only thing is that I would like for her to reach out to me-us-her friends and let us party with her on a couple of tracks. Of course, without getting "High". Otherwise, I give Meredith a lot of credit, and thank her for her album.
