Revolutionary, Vol. 2
Revolutionary, Vol. 2

Despite the popular perception that the death knell has already rung for political hip-hop, Immortal Technique jams a shot of adrenaline through the chest plate into hip-hop's conscious heart. Tackling topics from America's complicity in the drug trade ("Peruvian Cocaine") to the...
Lets Get Free
Lets Get Free

How did serious efforts to combat racism go outta' style in Hip-Hop Land? Who knows. But the battle ain't over. Dead Prez would rather defend free speech and poor communities than waste their Warholian 15 minutes obsessing over booze, blunts, and hos. Dead Prez's lacerating lyric...
Finding Forever
Finding Forever

It's no small feat to follow an instant classic like Common's Be (2005) but he skillfully builds on that success with a worthy sequel. The two albums share much in common, especially with Finding Forever's focus and brevity (under 50 minutes) and especially with Kanye West's musi...
Eardrum
Eardrum

In the "conscious" rap game, even mid-list mainstreamers tend to get all but shut out of the highest-profile vehicles for hip-hop (BET, MTV, urban radio). Among these, Talib Kweli remains that exemplary liminal artist, one foot in the artistic purity of his underground roots and ...
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

This debut revolutionized hip-hop (and launched half a dozen solo careers), as much for The RZA's raw barrage of off-kilter, off-key loops and sound effects as for its elliptically violent lyrics. Martial arts--at least as they appear in kung fu movies--are the Wu-Tang Clan's fav...
Black Star
Black Star

Even in hip-hop--a genre famous for auspicious debuts--Black Star, the first album from the team of Mos Def and Talib Kweli, stands out. It's not just because these guys know their history (an update of Slick Rick's classic "Children's Story," a fine jack of BDP's "The P Is Free"...

Hip Hop Is Dead
Hip Hop Is Dead

Given its provocative title, it's no surprise that parts of Hip Hop Is Dead feel like an elegy of sorts. Nas practically came into the game looking backwards (see "Memory Lane" off Illmatic) but he seems more nostalgic than ever with tracks like "Where Are They Now?," "Carry on T...
Game Theory
Game Theory

Despite their signing to Def Jam, on Game Theory the Roots head in a direction opposite from all the trendy, commercial formulas that the label has pioneered. This is as intensely a "Roots album" as anything they've put out, the rightful sequel to their brilliant, creative Phren...

Reviews:

OMG....Unreal
Believe the Hype.... Best lyrics I have ever heard/read on any rap album...sick hard hitting no joke beats....meaning none of those candy pop beats, club songs, no soft light r&b type songs all jaw dropping.....One of the only rap albums I can listen to nonstop.

Explosive debut
I'll admit that I heard of Immortal Technique through a certain reviewer(you know who you are! Thanks a million). Immortal Technique not only has an impressive flow but he also is a conscious lyricist. He has the sickest metaphors I've heard since Canibus and its evidenced in Creation & Destruction(the beat sounds like Biggie's Long Kiss Goodnight), Positive Balance(featuring Big Zoo), the Jean Grae produced Revolutionary etc. He flips it in Spanish and English on No Me Importa. Even though Poverty Of Philosophy is not a song, the truths he spoke on it make it a standout track. Dance With The Devil is vividly told story of a kid who tries to be accepted by an older crowd but the twist is shocking to say the least. The Illest with Jean Grae and Pumpkinhead is just that. As far as skip material goes.. I wasnt feeling Poison Pen's verses on Top Of The Food Chain(Remix) and Beef & Broccoli is just him venting about people who criticize other people's dietary habits. Bottom Line: Immortal Technique's Revolutionary Vol.1 is the best underground release of 2001. Immortal Technique not only has skills, he's giving you gems in the music. Something that commercial rap wont do. Plus the production was not bad. Also recommended: Revolutionary Vol.2. Standout Tracks: CREATIN & DESTRUCTION, DOMINANT SPECIES, POSITIVE BALANCE, NO ME IMPORTA, POVERTY OF PHILOSOPHY, REVOLUTIONARY(my favorite), DANCE WITH THE DEVIL, PROPHECY, NO MERCY, THE ILLEST and SPEAK YOUR MIND.

Like KRSONE Meets Chuck D with a Better Reading List
Musically, this is a strong rap album. Lyrically, it's amazing. Immortal Technique is easily the best informed rapper I've heard. Politically concious songs combine good lyrics and a strong grasp of what makes US society tick, as well as memorable music and creative word use to produce what is one of my all time favorite rap albums. Extra bonus: self produced and distributed - so he's not beholden to Megacorp LLC. He's obviously read Chomsky - institutional analysis/criticism in plain words. If you're bothered by vulgar/violent lyrics, this may not be the choice for you. Since I'm not, it got five stars.

Intelligent Rap
Immortal Technique is the best rapper I've heard in years. It's almost like Rage Against the Machine on hip hop beats. He is intelligent, entertaining, humorous, and meaningful at the same time. There isn't a single track on the CD that I don't absolutely love. SUPPORT INDEPENDENT HIP HOP.

heavy praise is due for this debut!
Oh yeah! I got vol. 2 first and had to go back for vol. 1, and I am so glad I did. Everything I.M. does is great. No complaints at all with my purchase. Can't wait for the next one.
