      Bonnie Raitt

Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
Never mind the Radcliffe education--Bonnie Raitt's real schooling occurred off-campus, in the folk and blues clubs of the Northeast, where she opened shows for legends such as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, and others. Raitt's self-titled debut, recorded when she was only 21 years old, is a stunner that still holds up decades later. Her slide-guitar skills are already in place, and her choice of material--which includes a reading for Stephen Stills's folk-rock gem "Bluebird," a sinuous take of Robert Johnson's classic "Walkin' Blues," a bluesy reworking of the Marvelettes' "Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead," and a pair of fine originals ("Thank You" and "Finest Lovin' Man")--is impeccable. Best of all are two songs from Raitt's mentor, Sippie Wallace--"Women Be Wise" and the startlingly randy "Mighty Tight Woman." It was clear from the beginning that Raitt's was a career to watch. --Daniel Durchholz

Give It Up
Give It Up

This 1972 collection set the bar it took years for Raitt to clear again. Moving easily between sensitive singer-songwriter and bawdy blues-mama roles, the blazing redhead proved she was a talent to watch on several fronts. Raitt demonstrated a keen instinct for finding suitable m...
Takin' My Time
Takin' My Time

Along with Give It Up, Bonnie Raitt's third album, Takin' My Time, stands as her finest work prior to her 1989 critical and commercial watershed, Nick of Time. Featuring an eclectic mix of pop, rock, blues, and soul, the material ranges from Eric Kaz's powerful ballad "Cry Like a...
Streetlights
Streetlights

Following her first three albums, all of which were wildly eclectic affairs, Bonnie Raitt was poised for a mainstream move, and 1974's Streetlights is it. There's no blues edge here whatsoever, and Raitt's guitar playing is subdued--both detractions--but the album also introduces...

Backed by her touring band, Raitt teamed up once again with Doors producer Paul Rothschild for her sixth and most successful album for Warner Bros. Features her bluesy version of Del Shannon's "Runaway."

Nick of Time

Nick of Time is the watershed moment in Bonnie Raitt's recording career, the sound of a survivor finding new focus and purpose in her art after nearly 20 years of generally superb, commercially underachieving recordings. An exquisite interpretive singer and formidable guitarist w...
Luck of the Draw
Luck of the Draw

As its title makes clear, the 1991 sequel to Bonnie Raitt's platinum breakthrough on Nick Of Time takes nothing for granted. Raitt had achieved sobriety, renewed commercial focus, and then the payday that the prior album yielded, but Luck Of The Draw mirrors an even fiercer deter...

Green Light

The late '70s found Bonnie Raitt casting about for a new musical direction. Ironically, she found it on 1982's Green Light by going back to the basics. The album finds her using her road musicians, the Bump Band (including former Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan) and handling most o...

Reviews:

CLASSIC BONNIE RAITT CD SOUNDS BETTER NOW!!!
I bought this first as a vinyl LP, then a cassette tape and now as a CD. I hadn't heard it for 10 or more years and it sounds even better now!!!! If you're in doubt-buy this CD!

Brilliant start to an outstanding career
While there were some people who recognized Bonnie's talent from the beginning, Bonnie had to wait almost twenty years after its release for her major breakthrough, during which time she gradually acquired more fans. So it was that this album, which remains one of Bonnie's best, has continued to sell steadily as all those new fans discover Bonnie's legacy. This album mixes blues, pop, rock and R+B - other influences came later - though blues is the main influence here. Bonnie wrote two of the songs here (Thank you, Finest loving man) but relied mainly on covers, beginning with a cover of Bluebird (written by Stephen Stills, famous as a member first of Buffalo Springfield then of Crosby Stills and Nash). One of Bonnie's major influences, Sippie Wallace, is represented by two songs (Mighty tight woman, Women be wise) while Bonnie also covers Any day woman (Paul Siebel), Walking blues (Robert Johnson) and Since I fell for you (Bud Johnson) among others. No serious Bonnie Raitt fan should be without this classic album.

You'll love it.
I do like Nick of Time and some of the tunes on Silver Lining, but I think this is the real Bonnie Raitt. The music has a little raw edge to it (it was recorded in a garage after all) but, the slide guitar work is great, and it clearly shows Bonnie Raitt was had a lot of talent even at the tender age of 21. It doesn't hurt that Junior Wells, local heros Willie Murphy and Dave Ray (of Koerner Ray and Glover) were involved. This is a great album.

In the beginning.....
A truly great blues record with the contribution of Junior Wells. It is unfortunate that Bonnie went far afield of these roots to become much more commercially successful. A great time capsule of the beginning of her career as a guitar player and singer.

Bonnie Enjoyed Making This Recording
I have been a fan since the first time I heard this album. I enjoyed each successive release, but more on a cut by cut basis up until the release of "Nick of Time." That's when I stopped buying her music. This one is the one I still love all the way through. There is a joy to this music. Bonnie and her fellow musicians had a good time making this record, and that is obvious to anyone who listens to it.
