This is one I came to late, but worth the wait
And all things do come in the right time. I've always loved Matthews' smoky voice with the smooth blend of sax and drum rhythms behind. "Stand Up" is an odd mix of political statement and romance. I think I'd be happier if they'd pick a theme here and stick to it. We've got two very distinct ideas here between romance and politics. "Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd" is seeing an old love again. "Steady as We Go" is an anthem for love--and life in general. Times may get rough but the good times are the 'gold.' Of course, there's "Dreamgirl," too and "American Baby." "Smooth Rider" talks about a guy getting in trouble with an angry father. "Everybody Wake Up" is a call to action to open your eyes and 'see the man with the bomb in his hand.' Good music, but for me it will need a remix to separate the two themes. Rebecca Kyle, October 2008

Wow - I never dreamed it could be so BAD - Negative points
It's rough. We like DMB and owe them so much for the pleasant memories. Hey DMB, ONLY your true friends are going to tell you the truth. This is GARBAGE but it has POTENTIAL. Yes we throw this thing around the office like a frisbee. We don't want to hurt you guys so we have a solution to this mess. Just get Reynolds on the line and have him mess with each song for about an hour. I PROMISE - you will have something interesting, creative, non-commercial and certainly not boringly pathetic. And get rid of that Bela Flek sax player and give some studio musician a chance. LeRoi Moore, a master, deserves better than to be replaced by some bela flek novice. Get Sonny Rollins or somebody with a clear understanding of Jazz and not Jazzercise. No offense to bela and his little band, your good enough to exist but you guys are not that great. Sad, at this point it would seem as though DMB disolved after crowded streets.

This was on my grown daughter's Xmas wish list. Must be good because she has her dad's good taste.

Life is music
I brought the Some Devil CD after watching a DVD with DMB's music. I ran into Stand Up and I was interested as I liked what I heard on Some Devil and the picture on this Cd promised like music, so I thought. I gave it away. It really dissappointed me. I don't know that it's worth buying more of his music. Cult music is usually for specific groups and I'm not a groupee.

Fantastic Disappointment
It's hard to look forward and be hopeful and open minded about this album when there is so much great music in DMB's past. Jazz musicians of this caliber are enormously gifted and continually challenge convention. They usually despise repetition and are always looking for new challenges. Thinking outside the norm is what makes jazz. They are constantly moving on. So when I see how far - yet how narrow the path - DMB has come from "Under the Table and Dreaming", "Busted Stuff", and my all-time favorite rock album "Crash", an exceptional and monumental work of elegant beauty, musical complexity, sweet emotion, sexual perversion, and pure jammin', kickin', rockin' music, it is very difficult for me to enjoy this work. Given the serious amount of talent the band possess, efforts such as this are a fantastic disappointment. Not to say they should dig a happy rut and stay put, but the simplistic rhythms, lack of enthusiasm, repetitive and vapid licks, tone-free vocals and ineloquent lyrics are an insult to any fan of DMB. Maybe on the next album they will actually work up a sweat.
