Prodcut Description: [More Information ...] At 4 discs and over 100 digitally remastered songs--many previously unreleased--this is the definitive Kingston Trio collection, probably more music than a casual listener needs, but precious for any fan. Although almost exclusively traditional--exceptions like "Seasons in the Sun" are predictably of minor interest--this box evidences the full range of their repertoire. "Shady Grove," "Remember the Alamo," "M.T.A.," and the energetic "Coal Tatoo" are all listenable: crew-cuts, striped shirts and all. --Roy Francis Kasten

Reviews:
Kingston Trio The Capitol Years I love the Kingston Trio and I have several sets of their CD's. The sound quality in these 4 CD's wasn't as good as in my other sets. However, as I said, I love the Trio and this set has a lot of songs that I don't have in my other sets and if you are as big a fan as I am, this set is still very enjoyable. Where's The Beef? How can Capitol release a collection of this scope and not include The Merry Minuet and Billy Goat Hill? Very disappointing. Perfect set.... This is one of my favorite albums, and one of the greatest box sets ever from arguably the greatest folk group the US ever produced. All the Trio's beloved songs are here, and there are some fine, gorgeous rarities (there are many live songs here, like Reuben James and They Call the Wind Maria, that are positively gorgeous and wonderful). The whole set is wonderful, with rarely a dull moment. Even the radio jingles for 7 Up are really fun to listen to. The song Tom Dooley is here, and despite having listened to it over and over and over again, it still haunts me and it's still a wonderful, quinessential folk ballad. This is a real treasure of a set. Anyone who loves American folk music and The Kingston Trio should pick this set up. Some Favorites Missing but Plenty of New Songs I still have my three very old Kingston Trio records - String Along, Stay Awhile, and Here We Go Again with the original trio. I also have three Best of albums which include newer members. Add to that TV appearances where I have been able to enjoy times they should have renamed themselves The Kingston Quartet. So when this 4-CD set of their material came out I bought it and have been delighted with the mixture of old classics and songs I never heard of. Sure, I miss San Miguel, Ballad of the Shape of Things, Everglades, and others, but I still have them on the albums and will eventually find them on CDs so they are not really lost. The variation of slow ballads and peppy numbers keeps me guessing as to what type of song is next. So many I have by other singers such as Mountains O' Mourne (I love Irish music) and Hobo's Lullaby which I have by Arlo Guthrie. I am not musical enough to rate the quality of the music, I just enjoy being able to sit down and listen to their singular sound for hours though, having to play them on a one-CD portable, I do have to change the disks. In these days of so much torment around the globe, it is nice to be able to put all that aside and listen to a collection of hits by such a long-standing group. May the tradition of having new musicians take over for those retiring continue forever.
The Capitol Years Box Set I gave this collection an average rating. I believe that there are too many tracks that are below the standard that I expect from this group.
I believe that advertising jingles should not be included in an album. |
