20th Century Masters: The Best Of Muddy Waters (Millennium Collection)

Muddy Waters's entry in MCA's 20th Century Masters is as good as the budget-minded series gets. True, it's a little lacking in the amount of material--just 12 tracks over the span of 32 minutes--but every one of these songs is a stone blues classic. The set is well focused, too, ...

20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Eco-Friendly Packaging)

Not comprehensive by any stretch of the imagination--there's only 12 tracks, for heaven's sake--this is still a pretty good collection for the casual or beginning John Lee Hooker fan. The remastering job on these tracks is excellent, and the material is topnotch, from the barfly'...

The Cream of Clapton

For a single disc, this is an admirable chronological tour of superstar Eric Clapton's mid-'60s-to-early-'80s career. It begins too late to include his gestational work with the Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. However, the singer-guitarist's days in Cream ("Sunshine of...

Ten

Part of the '90s Seattle grunge triumvirate completed by Nirvana and Soundgarden, Pearl Jam debuted with Ten, their most accessible, least self-conscious album. Over time, PJ's rep as a politically correct band just a little too above it all to prostitute its music on MTV has nea...

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

Layla stands as one of a handful of pillars of classic rock. The short-lived ensemble that was the Dominos provided an outlet for Eric Clapton to vent his then unrequited (and secret) passion for the wife of his best friend, George Harrison. Romantic anguish inspired Clapton to w...

Damn Right, I've Got the Blues: Expanded Edition

This guest-studded CD relaunched Buddy Guy's career and set him toward the pinnacle of contemporary blues. Despite turns from Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, and others, it's Guy who burns brightest--and loudest. He delivers roaring, exuberant performances of classic R&B ...

Reviews:

Early Buddy Guy!
The title of this CD is somewhat misleading in it's reference to the "Best of Buddy Guy" since ten of the eleven songs featured here were recorded between 1960 and 1966. The only exception is 'Talkin' 'Bout Women" which was recorded in 1970. What you really get here are arguably some of the best songs which Buddy recorded for Chess in the early days of his career. While all of the numbers essentially feature Buddy's fiery guitar and strained vocals the last song "Talkin' 'Bout Women" features an early collaboration with Junior Wells were Buddy plays an acoustic guitar and Junior sings and plays his harp. If you are looking for a "Best Of" CD you are going to have to look elsewhere. Overall, a good historical reference on the early career of Buddy Guy and some pretty good covers of some Willie Dixon materal.

Buddy's the greatest!
Can this Guy play the guitar or what. An excellent starter that gives a taste of his early stuff.
