The Freedom Sessions [EP] [ENHANCED CD]

Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
An off-the-cuff curio for McLachlan's growing legion of fans. Recorded late-night and live at Pierre Marchand's Studio Nomade in the Laurentians, these loose, acoustic versions of songs off Fumbling Towards Ecstasy bring the artist to the fore and--like P.J. Harvey's 8-Track Demos--often deliver a stronger emotional punch than the album counterparts. "Plenty," "Elsewhere," and "Hold On" are shivery standouts, while the cover of Tom Waits's "Ol' 55&qiot; is good, sloppy fun. Jeff Bateman

Rarities, B-Sides & Other Stuff

The Sarah McLachlan cottage industry rolls with Rarities. This disc of hard-to-finds and extended remixes offers some choice morsels for casual fans and a whole plateful for the faithful. The Freedom Sessions proved that McLachlan can do some nice stuff with a cover tune, and she...
Solace
Solace

Solace, Nova Scotian Sarah McLachlan's second album, is considerably more mature and musically sophisticated than her 1988 debut, the promising if limited Touch. In fact, this disc is a must-have for McLachlan fans whose first encounter with her work was with her extremely popula...

Culminated from Sarah McLachlan's illustrious recording career, the Rarities, B-Sides And Other Stuff, Volume 2 collection contains Sarah McLachlan material never before available before on one CD. The collection includes live performances, rare recordings, remixes and soundtrac...
Touch
Touch

Nova Scotia-born singer/songwriter Sarah McLachlan was only 20 years old when Touch was released in 1988. This is an impressive first effort, though maybe too earnest in its attempt to break new ground in otherwise familiar terrain of late-'80s synthesized textures. Yet McLachlan...
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

Pre-Lilith Fair, McLachlan had critical acclaim and a cult following but was otherwise just another hard-working female singer/songwriter--one who wasn't blasting down doors with overt sexuality or popping along in front of a male Svengali. Similar in their emotional urgency to h...

Surfacing
Surfacing

There's the requisite number of gorgeously melodic and deeply heartfelt songs here--the addictive "Sweet Surrender," the Hollywood-style ballad "I Love You," the sad, profound "Angel," the flat-out spectacular "Witness." McLachlan's not prolific, but this short, bittersweet album...
Afterglow
Afterglow

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer...
Mirrorball
Mirrorball

Grafted from McLachlan's supremely satisfying 1998 performances, Mirrorball is drawn almost equally from the multiplatinum Surfacing and its superior predecessor, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. (Included also is the lovely, hard-to-come-by "I Will Remember You.") Live, a haunting ball...
Wintersong
Wintersong

An album like this could cement Sarah McLachlan as a middle-of-the-road crooner ready for the Andy Williams Christmas Show, but there's more beneath the surface of Wintersong than just Christmas chestnuts, over-roasting on an open fire. Longtime McLachlan producer Pierre Marchan...

Reviews:

A Gift Well Received
I gave this CD to my mother (who is a Sarah McLauchlan fan) and she really enjoyed it.

Freedom Sessions
Just like every other Sarah McLachlan CD, Freedom Sessions is well worth your time and money.

A new twist on an old favorite
The beautiful, ethereal songs or Sarah Mclachlan are expanded and stretched and molded beautifully into something out of the ordinary on these new versions of some of her best-known works. All the songs are done differently yet the essence remains. This is my favorite of her CDs.

Late night smoky jam session produces some interesting takes
Sarah McLachlan recorded a late-night session at Pierre Marchand's studio that featured acoustic, stripped-down versions of favorites from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and the smoky, dark tracks bring an edge and bite not present on the sanitized studio versions of Elsewhere, Plenty, Mary, Good Enough, Hold On, Ice Cream, and Ice. The driving, staccato guitar, bongos, and McLachlan's shuddering drawl on Elsewhere are more immediate and passionate than the studio counterpart. She starts out singing as though the melody is being drawn out of her seductively, almost erotic in its breathless, moaned intensity. Plenty opens with disturbing, disoriented echoes and is largely a capella for the first half. Mary largely retains its original sound from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Hold On is a simple, piano-driven melancholy. Ice is anchored by a front-and-center electric bass and distorted guitar wails. Ice Cream features a haunting two-part harmony with Sarah and Pierre Marchand. Sarah's cover of Tom Waits' Ol' 55 is pure magic. A CD-ROM multimedia presentation is also included that features track-by-track audio samples from McLachlan's earlier albums Vox, Touch, and Solace, video clips, studio "home movies," concert footage and a travelogue of Sarah's trips to Cambodia and Thailand. However, as many fans criticized, this feels more like a "filler album" between Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing, but with some redeeming moments.

Life "Fumbling" -- truly great
Sarah's vocal and acoustic clarity on this cd are wonderful and phenomenal. I have all of her work, and this is a jewel in my collection.
