A Love Supreme
A Love Supreme

A Love Supreme is a suite about redemption, a work of pure spirit and song, that encapsulates all the struggles and aspirations of the 1960s. Following hard on the heels of the lyrical, swinging Crescent, A Love Supreme heralded Coltrane's search for spiritual and musical freedom...

Can't Quit the Blues

Robert Cray says that Buddy Guy's guitar solos sound like laughter from space, but they can also peal like the cries of lost souls attempting to cross the River Styx. If these 47 songs on three CDs plus a DVD boasting a new 75-minute documentary and six performances from the Mont...

Breakin' It Up & Breakin' It Down

Muddy Waters had his second coming 30 years ago, when longtime friend and disciple Johnny Winter and his Blue Sky label returned him--after a series of listless recordings aimed at the rock audience--to the raw, powerful authenticity of his timeless Chess material with a series o...
Magic
Magic

Thirty-five years as a justifiable rock musician allows Bruce Springsteen an opinion on the state of over-the-air radio, and he takes it--and takes the medium to the woodshed on the ruthless "Radio Nowhere." The opening smash sets the tone, with the ageless Boss wondering, "Is th...

The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James

Other post-WWII Chicago bluesmen are better known, but the work of Elmore James holds up as well as any of theirs. If he never had the technical accomplishment of, say, Earl Hooker, he did have as much depth of emotional expression as Muddy Waters; just listen to the sweetness of...
The Legend
The Legend

There are several Cash boxes available, but The Legend--spanning the years 1955-2002 but concentrating on his long tenure at Columbia and, to a lesser degree, his beginnings at Sun--probably belongs at the top of the list. Cash's greatest strengths are dramatized on these four, t...

Reviews:

Great Music; Atrocious Presentation
As for the amount of music, at eight bucks, this is a no-brainer. It is definitely worth picking up. Three compact discs, roughly thirty minutes of music on each (meaning it could easily fit on two discs), presented in what they're calling "LP edition packaging". This means that all three discs are on plastic plugs (which, in my case, failed to contain the discs during shipping) mounted on the inside of a lightweight cardstock folding sleeve designed to look like one would expect a vinyl record to come in. Couple this awkwardly large and inefficient packaging with a complete lack of linear notes or recording information, and we have a very mediocre product. The packaging is clearly responsible for the budget pricing, but if you're willing to store the abnormally large sleeve, are just buying it to rip for an mp3 player, or are willing to discard the packaging and store the disc elsewhere, this is by far worth the price. Especially if you're wanting to get a cheap buffer or intro into the music of Muddy Waters, this is a must buy.
