Samba Bossa Nova

Nova Bossa: Red Hot on Verve
Nova Bossa: Red Hot on Verve

More than merely a variant on the traditional samba beat, the bossa nova has had a rich life since it emerged in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s. It was introduced to American audiences by returning jazz musicians, including guitarist Charlie Byrd, who shared some its most famou...
Woman on Top
Woman on Top

The soundtrack from Woman on Top, starring Madrid-born bombshell Penelope Cruz as the beauty and brains behind a popular cooking show, is the perfect introduction to the Brazilian sound--and just might live up to the label's promise that it's "destined to bring Bossa Nova music t...
Getz/Gilberto
Getz/Gilberto

Originally released in March 1964, this collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto came at seemingly the end of the bossa nova craze Getz himself had sparked in 1962 with Jazz Samba, his release with American guitarist Charlie Byrd. Jazz Samba remain...
Wave
Wave

It's hardly a stretch to say that Antonio Carlos Jobim--the wonderful Brazilian composer almost single-handedly responsible for all things bossa nova--influenced some of past half century's best and most insipid musics, from bossa nova jazz to elevator Muzak. Wave, a collection o...

The Girl From Ipanema: The Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the wel...

Jazz Samba

Guitarist Charlie Byrd was invited to travel and play in Brazil during a cultural goodwill tour sponsored by the Kennedy administration in 1961. He was completely enamoured by the music, and when he returned, he headed straight for the recording studio to make the now classic Jaz...
The New Bossa Nova
The New Bossa Nova

Brazilian bossa nova has been called the "whisper heard around the world." But when a small cadre of Rio-based intellectuals mixed American jazz with local sambas, little did they know that it would prove so durable. The initial international craze, spearheaded by Astrud Gilberto...

Reviews:

great collection, but I might have got a bad CD
This is a really nice selection of bossa nova music, but my CD only had 20 tracks, despite being labeled as having 22. Did this happen to anybody else? Still, it's 20 tracks of really nice music, so I can't get too upset.

Better Bossa Nova collections out there
I haven't had much luck with trying to get good Brazilian music lately. This is just ok, not the type of Bossa Nova that you would usually think about with Brazil.

Enjoyable rhythms
I usually approach Brazilian music from the jazz point of view, so this compillation was an interesting change for me - much broader in scope, full of interesting musicians and performances (only some of them quite close to jazz). If you're a jazz fan(atic) this migh border on tedious and repetitive, but otherwise it's obviouslly interesting and challenging... I'm therefore giving it a star above the level of my listening pleasure.

jazzy, upbeat bossa nova
This collection is different from what I knew as bossa nova. It's jazzier and more upbeat. It's not exactly what I thought I would get, but I like it.

Great Brazilian Music
This CD provides you with some great tunes; danceable, easy to the ears, romantic and very sensual. The songs take me away and place me in the heart of Brazil; the land of high soaring spirits. Would highly recommend it.
