Reviews:
Great book but This book was disappointing to me because pretty much everything in it can be found on the Lamaze website or in the magazine. So save yourself some money and buy something else. Informative, but not what I was looking for I bought this book thinking it was a going to be more instructional, I wanted to understand what Lamaze and its curriculum was all about before I attended childbirth classes. I didnt find the book instuctional, however it was very imformative. I think it really tries to give women the confidence to trust their bodies, and minds to naturally be able to give birth to their child as well as take care of their child. I especially like the part about breastfeeding, since this will be my first child I am a bit apprehensive about my abilities to breast feed. Overall, it was pretty good, just not what I was looking for. Passing of the Knowledge We are blessed with our first grandchild's birth on the horizon. Yet, just decades ago, I was the young mother actively involved in Childbirth Education on a grassroots level. As an RN, sharing my support of LaMaze & other family centered birth issues was not warmly embraced in the workplace. Times changed & what was once resisted, became common place in obstetrical care.
Fast forward to decades later. It appears as if so many of those positive missions have been heavily replaced with institutional missions & policies. Our daughter's efforts to read about her pregnancy & the anticipated birth, lacked information that would ultimately offer her the confidence to facilitate a more natural experience. Amazon.com was soon to come to the rescue.
Sadly, when Abbi & her husband attended Birth Classes at their hospital, the word LaMaze was only mentioned ONCE. That was when the instructor asked the class if anyone there thought they were in a Lamaze Class. She wanted them to know that they weren't.
I encouraged Abbi to read about LaMaze to increase her comprehensive preparation. She was receptive to this encouragement & I was excited to find this book available on Amazon.com. I purchased the book for her & she has read it more than once. She was very excited & delighted with the book's support of the concept that birth is a natural process & she can work with her body if she is aware of what is truly normal to expect. This led to an interest in attending LaMaze classes.
A subsequent search resulted in the disappointing news that there are no LaMaze classes being taught in Central New York. She did locate a RN at a competing hospital, who is a Certified LaMaze Instructor. Although this RN teaches LaMaze only during two nights of their Birth Class, two nights is better than none at all!!! Abbi & her husband, Rich, will be attending those Lamaze nights. We are excited & grateful for them to have that opportunity.
Thank you to Amazon.com for helping to provide this introduction to an improved birth preparation. With the purchase of this book, and the reinforcement of the LaMaze nights, I am confident that our daughter, her husband, & our grandchild will have the cards stacked in their favor for a safer & more positive birth experience. Treat with caution The authors of this guide have a less-is-more approach to childbirth: medication, surgery and OB-GYNs all get a bum rap, while midwives and natural childbirth techniques are constantly praised. For some readers, that will come as a breath of fresh air, and even skeptics will come away with plenty to think about.
Sadly, though, the authors have a tendency to present a deeply - and occasionally dangerously - one-sided view of many of the issues they discuss. A case in point: the authors relegate their cursory discussion of prenatal vitamins to a dismissive paragraph or two, in which they entirely fail to mention the serious health risks associated with folic acid deficiencies. Troublingly, the authors actually misrepresent the findings from the source they cite in this instance: research which they claim suggests there's no evidence in favor of prenatal vitamins actually strongly recommends the use of certain individual vitamins.
The authors make similar, overly-sweeping generalizations about issues like prenatal testing, C-sections and the OB-GYN/midwife decision. In short -- this book's a useful starting point if you're looking for a fresh perspective, but approach it with caution, and be sure to do your own homework. excellent guide to pregnancy and childbirth This was the first book I read when I became pregnant. I loved it, found it so eye-opening, and it empowered me to seek the healthiest birth experience for me and my baby. There are great tools such as questions to ask your care-provider and potential place for giving birth. The emphasis is on evidence-based care and how to create the best possible context for your baby's birth. I highly recommend this book to all pregnant women, especially those interested in natural birth or just being better educated about our maternity system and how you can navigate it. |
