Reviews:
How Does It Compare Sound-Wise to Other S&G Collections/Box Sets? Of course, the songs are time tested classics - great songwriter, great arrangements and great voices will do that. Nearly every one of his songs could be released tomorrow for the first time and still sound fresh - they still sound great and you don't need any further reviews to the testament of his talent ... but more importantly if you own a bunch of his & S&G greatest hits and box sets, how does the sound compare?
I have: GREATEST HITS, ETC; NEGOTIATIONS AND LOVE SONGS and; the OLD FRIENDS BOX SET.
I bought the original GRACELAND CD upon first release and unless you have a remastered version, the GRaceland tracks all sound better here.
The LATE IN THE EVENING sounds much better here than on NEGOTIATIONS.
AMERICAN TUNE is the studio version and not a live version as it was on OLD FRIENDS.
ME & JULIO sounds much better here than on GREATEST HITS and NEGOTIATIONS.
SOUNDS OF SILENCE sounds slighty better on the remastered SOUNDS OF SILENCE CD than her though ...
Any tracks I don't mention are of comparable sound quality to the earlier collections (most of the S&G tracks repeated from OLD FRIENDS - they sound like the exact versions remastered from that set). So, you might not feel the need to buy this collection since you probably own most if not all the tracks and it's just a matter of sound fidelity - though if you want an extra CD to pop in, it's a great collection of great songs.
A set of Masterpieces This 2 Disc set includes Simon's greatest hits with the duo Simon & Garfunkel plus highlights from his solo work. Disc One includes the old classics from the 1960s like Sound Of Silence, El Condor Pasa and Cecilia, plus his 70s solo hits like the reggae ditties Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard and Mother And Child Reunion and other hits like the impressive American Tune and the fun hit 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. Disc Two draws from his masterpiece Graceland and the post-Graceland albums. Here my favourites include Boy In The Bubble, Under African Skies and You Can Call Me Al but others like Further To Fly are also beautiful. The anthology is a great compilation of his best known and commercially most successful songs. Higly reccomended. Includes most of his best songs. This is an amazing album as it includes a large number of incredible songs, making few sacrifices. I also love the second version of The Sound of Silence. This is a must buy for anyone looking for a collection of Paul Simon. In my personal All Time Top 10 It stands in my "personal bests" among Mozart, Beatles 62/66, Velvet & Nico, etc. A must buy ! |
