Reviews:
Super Active Roy!!! After listening to Roy Wood through the Move, Wizzard, and any solo projects from the late 60's and early 70's I figured there was no way he was going to come close to that collection of music. Surprisingly enough I was wrong. Super Active Wizzo takes his well crafted music style to another realm. To me it has some similarities to Steely Dan. How you ask? Well Roy Wood was fusing jazz elements with the steel guitar style of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. The only thing missing is keyboards which is unneeded because of his precise guitar playing and all the other instruments like sitar he plays mostly himself. Dave Donovan is a welcome addition on drums. His very complex and changing style keeps the album fresh the whole way through. It is also nice to see the return of Rick Price from the Move and Wizzard. I guess this just proves you cannot go wrong with Roy Wood. Finally! Roy Wood - Ever the under rated artist on American shores, but one of the true geniuses of the british pop scene spanning several decades worth of output. This album, came and went without a trace. Here in the States, it was never even released. Anyone interesed enough, would have had to get an import copy, back in '78 when it came out. Which then, was still somewhat difficult. Anyway - it's worth your while to have a listen. If you have any sort of appreciation for Roy Wood, it'll be for his uncanny knack of finding surprising melodies, occassionally heartbreaking lyrics, and just as often, as soulful a way of singing. Oh, and of course, his incredible guitar dexterity. All of which is always tied together with a kind of hand crafted, lumbering quality, which often sounds roughhewn, home made and exceptionally human. So... imagine if you will, the tail end of the '70's, the end of the "Wall of Sound" renaissance that dominated that era, and Wood's proclivity for pop, jazz and eclecticism. Now, mix it together with a big band. It's as though a floating armada of pop were inching across the sea toward you, getting bigger and louder all the while. This is an absolutely beautiful record. There is nothing even remotely like it. Simply fabulous! |
