"We're done," says Stewart Copeland near the end of Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, his homemade documentary about the rise and eventual fall of the group that ruled the planet during their '70s-'80s heyday. "When you get to where you're going, the ride is over." Yeah, bu...

Reviews:

Shades of The Police
He can't sing like Sting, but Andy Summers demonstrates some good pop sensibilities on this solo album, his first since the breakup of The Police. "Scary Voices" is melodic if unusual, and overall, this is more of a pop album along the lines earlier Police work than a brilliant solo breakthrough for Andy Summers, but it's a decent listen, and fans of him or The Police may want to check it out.

A Mainstream Record by Andy Summers
This is the one Andy Summers record that I have heard that it is not jazz. It is a fairly strong mainstream record, probably what we might have expected as a first endeavor after the Police. While the record sounds great, Andy doesn't stretch himself vocally. He stays in a very limited range, which, I think, limits the attractiveness and effectiveness of this endeavor. His voice is not unpleasant and the listener is left with the impression that he could have created a much stronger recording by taking more chances.

Nice album
There isn't anything particularly phenomenal or adventurous about this album. However, it is quite good for pop music, and gives Summers a chance to show of his amazing fluency with "neutral" chords. Fans of the Police will recognize in this album a certain textural, minimalist philosophy that has been a hallmark of his since early on (no doubt greatly influenced by his work with Robert Fripp, e.g. "I Advance Masked"). While not the greatest singer, Summers' voice has an honest, real quality that is actually quite endearing. As to the reviewer who states that the album could have been better had it not been for Summmers lack of enrolling a plethora of other musicians to contribute their instrumental skills because of his ego, this reviewer has completely missed the mark. The reason for some of the electronic accompaniment and so forth is was purely economical. And Andy Summers is truly one of the most humble, self-effacing musicians I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

Andy sings!
I loved this CD for the simple reason that Andy sang. His only vocal solo effort. There are some very catchy tunes on here, and some excellent guitar work. I saw him tour to support this CD and most of the songs on XYZ translated quite well to a live setting. To compare this CD to The Police denies Andy an identity. The songs on XYZ could be Police tracks I suppose, but they're not. Part of The Police's power was the individual strengths each member brought to that group. This release showed the world, maybe for the first time, that Andy is a terrific song writer.
