Prodcut Description: [More Information ...]
Whitney Houston recaptures some former glory on her first studio album, thanks to her undiminished vocal prowess and a cadre of impressive producers that includes Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs, Babyface, Teddy Bishop, and Troy Taylor. Houston's pipes shine in the big break-up ballad "On My Own," which is cut from the same mold as 1993's massive "I Will Always Love You." But while her vocal chords are intact, some of the material here leaves much to be desired, including a flat version of Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Light" and the Missy Elliot-penned and -produced "Things You Say." On the plus side, the feisty "Tell Her No" finds Houston on defense, but she's much more interesting with her back against the wall as she huffs: "I can't wait for the day I can rub things in your face." The embattled diva doesn't attempt to gloss over her foibles, as evidenced by "Unashamed" ("Listen here and listen good/ I'm unashamed of the life that I lead, unashamed of the strength of my need"), "Love That Man," and "Whatchulookinat," a body slam at the tabloids that have documented Houston and hubby Bobby Brown's very public falls from grace. Houston may not have recovered her hegemony of the charts, but this album proves she's once again pointed in the right direction. --Jaan Uhelszki

Whitney Houston

When Whitney Houston arrived on the scene as a fresh-faced ing(nue in 1985, few could have predicted the level of superstardom she'd achieve or how fast she'd do it. Certainly the voice was there--supple, soulful, and when called upon, explosive. But the material on her debut al...

Reviews:

Whitney's Voice Is Gone
I sampled this cd and couldn't believe what I heard. Whitney's voice has is just.....gone. She can barely hold a note now. It was getting bad on the "My Love Is Your Love" album but it was tollerable there. But now it's just...terrible. Not only that, there's really no good production on this album. Even if there was, I could take the sound of a cracked out Whitney. I miss the old Whitney.

Glimpses of her greatness
One wonders what would have happened if Janice Joplin had not let drugs take her life. Would we worship her the way we do today, or would we criticize her in the same way? I am at a hard place in evaluating this album. While it is true that it is not at the Whitney level we all know she can achieve, if this was her debut, we would be blown away. Do we judge this recording on the recording itself, or on what we know of her talent (her personal issues aside)? I enjoy it, but there is not much here that's outstanding. Also, the sound is very commercial, and that is an issue with that. She seems to start out shaky, but the old Whitney comes back after a couple of songs. Oh how I wish she would make a comeback!

loved the album
I loved the album, but it wished it had more songs on there. It was upsetting at times to hear the music that we ought to expect I still love her music and now with Bobby gone, she will be better than ever.

crack is wack
crack is wack whit's lost it here her music sucks now we are tired of watching her and that trainwreck husband of hers will one of them please OD already and take brit and lindsay lohan with you.

Bravo, Whitney!
I had been out of the Whitney Houston loop for a while, and I just discovered this CD...just came in the mail today, actually! I loved it! Whitney's voice has changed a bit, but that happens over the years! I think her voice is still the best out there!
