RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta

Yep, this is Dead Prez's famously long-delayed album, finally surfacing after a string of label deals gone wonky, but no amount of red tape could've stopped the Red, Black, and Green movement--colors of the African Liberation flag--that is tirelessly championed here. Equal part a...
Lets Get Free
Lets Get Free

How did serious efforts to combat racism go outta' style in Hip-Hop Land? Who knows. But the battle ain't over. Dead Prez would rather defend free speech and poor communities than waste their Warholian 15 minutes obsessing over booze, blunts, and hos. Dead Prez's lacerating lyric...

Black Star
Black Star

Even in hip-hop--a genre famous for auspicious debuts--Black Star, the first album from the team of Mos Def and Talib Kweli, stands out. It's not just because these guys know their history (an update of Slick Rick's classic "Children's Story," a fine jack of BDP's "The P Is Free"...

Eardrum

In the "conscious" rap game, even mid-list mainstreamers tend to get all but shut out of the highest-profile vehicles for hip-hop (BET, MTV, urban radio). Among these, Talib Kweli remains that exemplary liminal artist, one foot in the artistic purity of his underground roots and ...

Things Fall Apart

They've long been hip-hop's best band, for whatever that's worth, and in their amazing live shows they've shown an ability to pay homage to the past and look to the future--all while living firmly in the now. But on Things Fall Apart, the Roots finally pull their promise and abil...

Reviews:

The best mixtape of the year
Dead Prez keeps the gems coming on this second mixtape Get Free Or Die Trying. While these other guys' mixtapes are all about guns, drugs and whose breath smells like badunkadunk, Dead Prez continues to give you socially and politically conscious rhymes. Standout Tracks: F*** THE LAW, COMING OF AGE, TALLAHASSEE DAYS, SCARED TO DIE(free Askari X), BABYFACE(dude killed it!), WHEN MAMMA CRIES, WINDOW TO MY SOUL(Stic dedicates this one to his dope fiend brother), LAST DAYS RELOADED(killer collabo with Onyx), REAL BLACK GIRL(the beat is hypnotizing)and O.G.(Original Garvey). Filler: Out in the world(sounds like circus music)and Paper Paper(too short to be enjoyed). Bottom Line: Get Free Or Die Trying is a great follow up to Turn Off The Radio. Unlike the first one they dont borrow anybody's beat they use their own beats plus the production is tight. I strongly recommend this mixtape for anybody who wants a break from the norm.

Dead Prez- Turn Off The Radio: The Mixtape, Vol. 2: Get Free or Die Tryin'
Having bought both of Dead Prez (Stic.Man, M-1) album's "Lets Get Free" & "RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta", and enjoyed M-1's solo album " Dead Prez Presents M-1: Confidential" and their latest mixtape collaboration with the Outlawz "Can't Sell Dope Forever", I checked out their second official mixtape release "Turn Off The Radio: The Mixtape, Vol. 2: Get Free Or Die Tryin'" (2003). After the intro Dead Prez start the album off with a banger in "F*** The Law". They then change things up providing a memorable and laidback joint in "Coming Of Age", Stic.Man delivers a outstanding chorus, and the duo recall days past. After two short track's Dead Prez deliver a solid cut with "Scared to Die". Dead Prez shines again when telling tragic and deep tales on the sad "When Mama Cries". Dead Prez then tag team "Last Days Reloaded" with Onyx providing a grimy cut. Other track's that follow are not so memorable- more experimental with very little production. "Turn Off The Radio: The Mixtape, Vol. 2: Get Free Or Die Tryin'" is a solid Mixtape. Dead Prez in my opinion are one of the best current group's in the Rap game, delivering substantial hard hitting music in an industry full of one hit wonders. I am looking forward to Dead Prez next release and hope that Stic.Man decides to do a solo album.

Revolutionary Disciples
Thank Goodness for Dead Prez to keep us uplifted, inspired and educated through the trail & tribulations bought on by the media and those self proclaimed right wingers. This is a revolutionary hip hop classic. Definately one for your collection. Not since Public Ememy have we had true crusaders on the mike to spit truth & reality. Go Get This Mixtape.
