Living up to the moniker originally given them via a San Francisco radio contest, Journey traveled a restless, often less-than-promising arc as a prog-centric quartet during the early '70s. But the addition of Steve Perry's soaring tenor to the mix on 1978's Infinity instantly ch...

Reviews:

Timeless Steve Perry Sings the BEST
The brillance and range of Steve Perry is showcased in this album. The songs are soulful- almost sad but wonderful. anyone could relate to the verses of "Easy to Fall" to "only the Rain".I never tire of listening to these songs. Buy it for its timeliness and of course to hear the best of "THE VOICE".

I love this CD!
I have to admit, I was never a big Journey fan back in the day. I didn't dislike them, I was just into different music at the time. Recently after reading about the new Journey front man and the Steve versus Arnel controversy, I found myself intrigued and picked up Journey's Greatest Hits. I was stunned! I knew the words to every song as though I had absorbed the music subliminally. I began to realize that truly, Journey provided the soundtrack of the 80's. I now wanted more. So I picked up this little gem. What I like about it is that it's not the Journey of the 80's. Don't get me wrong, that music was great but been there done that. To stay creatively fresh an artist needs to keep moving forward. I don't think it would've served Journey well to just keep cranking out the same stuff they did in 83'. Trial By Fire's a more mature work. No, Steve Perry probably couldn't hit the high notes anymore, but so what? What he may have lacked in the upper register is more than made up for by the husky soulfulness of his voice and impeccable phrasing. While I like SP's FLOSM, I think he was at his best when working with Jonathan & Neal. I love this CD!

hhhhhhello Mr. Moon
Whoever you are, buy this album, open it; don't look at the cover, just open it, put it in your cd player and skip all of the first three songs, then play the entire album without stopping. This beautiful piece of work is a shining example of what extreme talent can accomplish when channeled in a creatively free environment. The first three songs are chaff meant to impress the dieing classic rock stations of the mid to late 90's. Toss these out and this album is more than timeless, it is heartwarming and emotionally stimulating after a hundred plays over a hundred years.

Truly a great one.
I totally disagree with most of the reviews of this album here as I think it is one of the best melodic rock albums released the last fifteen years or so.It is truly a treat for the heart and soul packed with good songs, delicate arrangements with a stellar production. It has come to be one of my "desert island discs" and I truly love it. Maybe it has something to do with being a musician and songwriter myself who knows but if you like Journey you'll enjoy this album as well as the others.Too bad the Steve Perry-era ended with this one.

Sweet Merciful Christ
I haven't pulled this one out for 5 years or so. I'm sorry that I did. I was making my best of Journey CD (post Perry not included) and searched Trial by Fire for a gem or 2. I can honestly say this CD sorely sucks. I'm almost sure these are out-takes from the last few CD's in the 80's. How many balads are there on this thing? Take a look at the picture of the band on the jacket. Was Perry cut and pasted in? He looks like he'd rather be taking a crap. I love this band but this album was a mistake.
