Reviews:
This is a really underrated compilation, and I've heard many! Ultra Records does have a mixed rep when it comes to their compilations, especially the ones imported under the "Ministry of Sound" American guise. But this is actually very close to an MoS Annual, the way the tracks are selected and edgey transitions between make it very danceable and amazing to drive to.
The highlights here are tracks you won't find full-on club mixes of on other comp's -
Cascada - Truly Madly Deeply - Club Mix
Audio Club - Sumthin Serious - Ian Carey's amazing rmx
Alex Gaudino - Destination Calabria - Club Mix
Oakenfold - Sex 'N Money - Club Mix
September - Cry For You - Extended is amazing here
Mason vs Princess Superstar - Perfect Exceeder - Club Mix
Fedde Le Grand & Camille Jones - The Creeps - Club Mix
Chris Lake - Changes - Dirty South Remix
Pink - U + Ur Hand - Bimbo Jones Remix
I'd give this 5 stars, but I disagree with one track. The remix of Goldfrapp's Ride A White Horse. Not only is this bad compared to the original mix, but they mixed/faded in all wrong right after the pounding bass-line of the Sumthin Serious Remix..even so, it just gets forgotten compared to the rest of the comp's greatness. The usual format--1 disc of more commercial hits, 1 disc of progressive deliciousness CD1
While Ultra Weekend isn't quite distinguishable from the Ultra Dance volumes, it does deliver some of the biggest remixers and artists. The real issue with this volume is that many of the biggest, hardest tracks to get on CD don't have very long durations on the commercial disc:
1. hurt...christina Aguilera (5:45) (this is the club mix heard most of all the mixes out there. Great mix--wish it had been longer than 5:45)
2. Promiscuous...Nelly Furtado (3:47) (more of a funky/disco groove than the Ralphi Rosario mix. Again--not long enough!)
3. With Love...hilary Duff (4:35) The thumping electro house mix. Not even 5 minutes!)
4. Unfaithful...Rihanna (7:34) (the brilliant Tony Moran mix, and closing in on 8 minutes long, it is one of the few high points for collectors)
5. U & Ur Hand...Pink (5:40) (nice length run of the slammin' bimbo jones mix of this hot Pink track)
6. Here in your Arms...Hellogoodbye (2:49) (WHY bother putting it on here for less than 3 minutes? And as always, none of the remixes can live up to the synthpop perfection of the original mix)
7. sumthin serious...audio club (5:14) (awesome electro house mix of this ridiculously catchy track)
8. Ride a white horse...goldfrapp (5:24) (a bit more progressive electro we expect from goldfrapp. This one's a great trip)
9. Cry for you...September (4:39) (follow-up to "satellites" is another commercial dance winner with an electro house edge)
10. Showstopper...Danity Kane (6:48) (if for nothing else, THIS is the reason to buy this CD--nearly 7 minutes of the commercially unreleased Dave Aude electro mix of P. Diddy's latest ensemble)
11. in the dark...tiesto (4:44) (nice, atmospheric male vocal track by tiesto. Love this track--reminds me of The Killers)
12. truly madly deeply (4:06) (just what it sounds like. Cascada covering Savage Garden)
CD2
Disc 2 begins with the `groovy' house track by Bob Sinclar, which is not my thing, but it then progresses into a predominantly darker, deeper, harder mix of electro house that keeps you pumped throughout, with a few big tracks like "proper education", "sex n money", and "feel alive." The tracks are predominantly longer on this disc:
1. world hold on...bob sinclar (7:23)
2. SOS...Stonebridge (7:00)
3. Destination calabria...alex gaudino (5:10)
4. Perfect...mason vs. princess superstar (5:37)
5. The creeps...Camille jones (5:52)
6. Lollipop...dada (5:26)
7. Proper education...eric prydz vs. floyd (4:57)
8. Changes...chris lake (6:54)
9. Sex n Money...oakenfold (5:46)
10. World is mine...david guetta (6:06)
11. Feel alive...benassi (4:38)
12. Sorry...kaskade (6:21)
nice! I like this... there is a compilation I found on itunes called "EURO CLUB HITS VOL. 1" that has more stuff like this, even better some of it A GR8 SELECTION FROM ULTRA Just to say I heard all the samples on another website, very nicely done. Ultra records did it again! The usual format--1 disc of more commercial hits, 1 disc of progressive deliciousness CD1
