Once in a Lifetime

The Talking Heads should have been the least commercial of the storied first-generation New York punk/new wave bands. After all, they didn't have the impact of the Ramones, they didn't possess the virtuosity of Television, and they weren't as accessible as Blondie. Or so it seeme...

Reviews:

Never ordinary, always brilliant.
Talking Heads never half-do ANYTHING. This is the proof. While this video appears to be just a standard video anthology, it is much more. Each video is connected by bits of everyday people saying some strange (and sometimes shocking) things. Telling their true stories (no pun intended). These bits interconnect the videos, which are also marvelous. The videos sometimes have stunning effects or few effects... but always have a great feeling to them. The music is awesome, the videos are true art, the layout of the video is great. And have some kleenex ready for the final scene. It's very emotional.-Sir Deuteronomy McClurkin, esq.

Visually Astounding and In Every Way Artistic
It is unquestionable that the Talking Heads turned what they do into a form of art (a word that has long been associated with the group), without turning the product into a boring cliche`. The band perfected this art both musically and visually; this is clearly seen in their highly entertaining and thought-provoking music videos, collected here in "Storytelling Giant.""Storytelling Giant" is comprised of the ten music videos made by the Talking Heads during the 1980's. Linked together by random shots of ordinary people having ordinary (but often unusual conversations), each video gives the viewer a clear perspective on just why the word "art" has been associated with the Talking Heads since their debut; the videos are entertaining and remarkably inventive. These classic promos have become trademarks of the band, and symbols of new wave rock in itself. Who can forget "Once in a Lifetime," highlighting frontman David Byrne in his radio evangelist persona, dancing with innovative jerky movements and flailing limbs. "Burning Down the House" features some of the most astounding, if simple, dance moves ever captured on video, and the classic white suit wardrobe. The visually captivating "Road to Nowhere" boasts cinematography unlike any other, with amazing effects, not to mention Byrne's famous running-in-place choreography. Seven other examples of brilliancy included. Every video featured on "Storytelling Giant" is too good for MTV. Anything being produced now, by anyone, can consider this astounding collection of videos a lesson in visual and musical perfection.

Take a look at these hands.
This collection gathers a decade's worth of the band's groundbreaking music videos and connects them with random, spontaneous footage of real people talking. These unrehearsed moments share the same quirky feel of David Byrne's film "True Stories," which is also where the videos for "Wild Wild Life" and "Love For Sale" are taken from. Byrne directed several of the videos himself, including "Burning Down The House,""This Must Be The Place" and "Road To Nowhere." Toni Basil (of "Hey Mickey" fame) directed "Crosseyed and Painless" and "Once In A Lifetime," while Jim Jarmusch helmed "The Lady Don't Mind." Animator Jim Blashfield did the remarkable "And She Was." With each hit release, the band offers up a visual compliment that is just as imaginative, just as compelling and just as artful as the music. As the contents of this tape illustrate, the Talking Heads were one of the few groups who were able to consistently use their music videos to actually enhance the feel of the song, rather than just sell it.

Just plain cool stuff.
Talking Heads made some of the greatest music ever. These videos add a very interesting, entertaining and unique visual element to the music. Another treat are the people between the videos. They're just talking people, and it's cool. This is a terrific party video.

I'm writing about the video I watched
David Byrne and co. never fail to amaze me. In this, a compilation of their videos, we're not only treated to the great music and eccentric visuals & choreography of David Byrne, but we also get to hear brief snippets of some ordinary, but incredibly interesting, individuals. The ending will move you to tears.
