Emmy® winner Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives) won the Best Actress (Drama) Golden Globe® Award for her "fiercely funny and deeply powerful" performance (Pete Hammond, Maxim) that is "thrilling to watch." (A.O. Scott, The New York Times) Huffman plays Bree Osbourne, a conservative transsexual woman, who learns she is the parent of a long-lost 17-year-old son (Kevin Zegers). The wheels of fortune take Bree and son on a cross-country adventure, including a memorable visit with Bree’s parents, that will change both of their lives. A funny, touching, completely original look at the modern American family, "TRANSAMERICA will leave you in a state of movie euphoria. It’s hilarious and deeply affecting." (Joe Morgenstern, The Wall Street Journal. "Felicity Huffman is incredible. One of the year’s most unforgettable performances." -Stephen Mooallem, Interview

Reviews:

Seen this film yet...?
This is my FAVORITE movie... Why, you ask? Maybe because my friend, Sandi Alexander has a featured role in it, OK? And she is SO good...!

Predictable or Predictably excellent?
Not knowing much of Felicity Hoffman's work other than Desperate Housewives I was drawn to this movie due to its status as art film/low budget etc... and I was amazed to discover wonderful acting performances from particularly her but also from the other key characters. The storyline was anything but common, a woman trapped in a mans body dying for a sexchange operation suddenly realising she might be the father of a dysfunctional teenage son! What followed however was rather predictable, the two thrown together in a car driving across America, bonding and gradually developing a closer relationship. Despite the predictable outcome what was less predictable was how drawn into the improbable story we as viewers get and how we fast get to grips the almost absurd situations that emerge - we gain empathy with all the characters even though non can claim not to flawed... A great little movie - a nice surprise - and A HURRAH for independent film making which will never be able to steal the limelight from the big Hollywood productions but which often make for far better viewing.

Wasn't Impressed
I thought the acting in this movie was wonderful. It was what I thought it would be but it just did not do anyhting for me. I wasn't impressed with it at all. It was bland in some points and in others I thought it was finally picking up it would go back down. I think it is a wonderful story but it just did not impress me at all. Definatly not a movie I would watch again or refer anyone to.

realistic depiction, suprisingly heartwarming, excellent acting
I was personally intrigued to watch this movie, having myself gone through recently having a friend who revealed that he wanted to become a woman. His fears were lived in not knowing how any of his friends would accept him during this process. He was my roommate, and so i lived with him as he went on this journey. It was a challenge for me to personally understand and attempt to lovingly encourage some of the changes he wanted to make. All of my own fears, hesitations, problems with people's hatred towards the transgender community were addressed in this film. Felicity Hauffman, was convincing in this role, and the young guy who plays her son... powerful, sometimes disturbing yet beautiful acting. This movie is not for the faint of heart. There is some scenes of graphic nudity, graphic language that depicts sexual abuse, and it holds few bars on being polite about the realistic emotional journey of the family going through life with a transgender person. That said, there is a beauty...a maturity... that resonates thru the film that tells a story, and gives a timeless message. Love, in its truest form, has no conditions. I highly recommend this film for all that would open their hearts and minds, set aside their issue with this subject, and see a very honest point of view they may not share, but at the end of the day maybe come to peace with.

Hammy Acting
Offbeat topic and characters are appealing, but the dialogue itself is kind of corny. And the acting kind of hammy. Maybe okay as a mildly amusing distraction to fill some time-- if there is nothing better to watch.
